The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

I don't know about the S-Drives on the track but the folks over on the Miata forum rave about them as a daily tire.

The wheels look good on your car. (2thumbs)

Thanks!! The tire tread definitely makes them seem like more of a daily tire compared to the Kumhos. I'll need to drive on them more to see. On my way to work, I noticed that the steering response isn't as quick or crisp as it is with the Kuhmos. I had to fill the tires with more air at lunch so maybe the steering response was effected by the low tire pressure?

When I first started driving with the wheels on, it felt weird. The steering wheel turns with noticeably less effort. I'm thinking it's due to the lower weight of the wheels?

I'll just kill the Kuhmos on the track. Then, I might sell them and buy a set of 17x8s for the track. 18" tires are just too damn expensive!

^not to be a dick but the MSR's weigh more than the rx8s do....

msr's are around 24lbs and the rx8's are around 21lbs

No. It's due to the less grip of the tires themselves.

Response is less due to less stiff sidewalls. The tires give more before reacting.

That makes sense. The less sticky Yokohama tires have less grip...so less friction when the wheel's turning.

The MSRs have 225/35/18 and the RX8s have 235/40/18. I'm not sure how much of a weight different there is between the tires.

I haven't look much since I'm working (and my boss is near by lol)...but I'll try to find the weights of the wheels.

That's definitely a good plan. It's really easy to find used slicks in that size.

Don't sell the RX8 wheels though they look sexy on your car! :D Use up the S Drives then get rid of those!

Haha...I won't have to think about this for a while hopefully. So I'm not sure yet.

I just found the weights for my wheels on MSR's site and they say 22lbs each. How much do RX8 wheels weigh? I can't find a solid answer on any forum...some say 22, some say 23, and some say 24! lol

Wes was telling me about an article in Grassroots Motorsports magazine that they used a Miata as a test mule with lightweight wheels and heavy wheels and the lap time differences were very small, I believe less than a half second. So I wouldn't worry too much about wheel weight.

Lol you must be doing okay with your memory, old man, I don't even remember that! It must be the GRM from 2005 that we got at Team Sahlen's, because that's the only issue I have.

Isn't there a big difference in offset as well? I would think that makes it feel different. +52 for RX8s and +38 (right?) for MSRs

My buddies asked me to sit in on bass for their band (The Uncanny Xela) at the Great Lakes Burning River Festival July 23rd. I'm pretty stoked. They are great muscians and I miss playing out live. There will be lots of beer there, guys. ;)
