OEM Hitch

Has anyone installed the Class 2 hitch that comes from Mazda? If so do the installer's do the cut out in the bumper as shown in the Mazda Accessories page?

There is marking on the inside of the bumper indicating where and how big to cut. It
is obvious once you see it.

I actually just put a CURT on mine, ordered it from Amazon, it was like $120! Heck of a deal and looks great! I wanted the Mazda one, but didn't want to pay what they wanted :(

You do realize that the OEM trailer hitch option includes a dedicated transmission oil cooler right?

The OE hitch receiver alone costs $350 online or at dealerships.
You don't need the extra cooler and bigger radiator (etc.) if you don't intend to tow 3500lbs(*).

(*)take driver and passenger weight and cargo weight off that number.

I think every AWD cx9 has the ecu/transmission/fan upgrades by default, and it is an option to get these upgrades on a fwd GT...

Pretty sure on this, but I certainly could be wrong. In other words, every AWD has the 3500lb towing capacity and installing an aftermarket hitch (if high enough quality) should have the same towing capacity on an AWD as if it was ordered with the towing hitch when new.

By the way, my local dealer quoted me about $800 for the hitch and the labor to install it as I was trying to negotiate price with him on a car on his lot. Wow, liar.

nsrg,
what you said is correct for later model years.
For 2008 (at least) and earlier, AWD does not mean Tow Preped.
Mine, for instance, can only tow up to 2000lbs.
I am OK since I don't tow anything really. I use the hitch for bike rack only.

I am looking to put the OEM hitch on my 2010 CX9 AWD Touring and my understanding is the car should have a 3500 lb towing capacity. Although when I called Mazda they were pretty insistent on me locating the radiator code for the purposes of determining which tow rating the car was set up for in the factory. The code can be either CA-26 or CA-27. So where can I find the code??? My understanding is if the car has CA-26 then I need to purchase a harness along with the hitch. Thanks for the help. Pics would help.

Easy. If you can see two fan control modules (a silver box with heat dissipation fins/heat sink near the fan), yours has tow package.
Therefore, 3500lb tow rating. Non-tow package CX9 only has ONE fan controller.

The easiest way is call your local mazda dealer, ask for parts department, give them your vin# and ask them for a price for a radiator, and once they have the radiator pulled up, ask them if it is the heavy duty radiator, or the standard duty.

Alternate way to determine if you have towing prep package: you should have 1) an auxiliary transmission cooler, which is a small cooler that sits in front of your a/c condensor and looks like the below image (the small cooler). (that size or smaller)
Is it possible that Mazda could have done a redesign at some point and not put a trans cooler in, but a heavy duty radiator on? who knows.

I have two of these, and my dealership indicated that all I needed to tow up to the max is a trailer hitch. You also will need to add a 15 amp fuse in the fuse box in the Trailer slot

On my 2010 CX9 AWG GT I found the Radiator code on top of the radiator.

If you have a CA26 (2000 lbs), you need the main harness and the jumper harness. The jumper harness is required to provide power to the rear for the main harness. If you have CA 27, then you only need the main harness. My Dealer's parts manager called Mazda and then dowenloaded a sheet that explained it all, and once I saw that I had CA27 and ordered my main harness, I lost the sheet?
