Full standalone is mostly reserved for completely build cars that require such tuning, not saying a stock MSP can't use it or even benefit from it. What are you looking to do? Standalones are not cheap, so don't think you will get one for $200.

Best STANDalone would be Haltech IMHO. Sprint 500 or Sprint 1000 are good starters. I will be running a Haltech Sprint 500 with the AEM Harness Extension fully wired up for 1500$.
Yeah I used Haltech on my celica alltrac and loved it.
That's a bit steep if you don't mind my saying. Who's offering that package?

Im about to use the new EMS-4 from AEM anybody else looked into this? There about $900 with the wiring harness
The EMS-4 looks to be a solid bargin. Do you have it already? Interested in feedback on the unit.

Ya making a plug and play harness for it and hopfully next weekend ill have time to install it.
It should do everything the sprint 500 from haltech but with a smaller price!

The Reasearch has been done in this forum over the years, and the hands down winner is the Haltech.. Tried tested proven, there were a few who tried to go with the AEM, but had several problems and headaches getting it to work. The some of the other systems tried are not standalone, and still end up with the inconsistencies of the factory ECU.
Please note, that even when running the Haltech, the factory ecu will still be plugged in to carru out functions such as tach control, ABS, Stability control etc.

Why dont you all go email the guys at DIYautotune, with enough interest im sure they will get jumping on a DIYPNP for the protege. They said that progress was being made on it but i haven't heard back. We just need to get enough interest shown for our cars, then we can all have $400 standalones.

I have microtech and it works great for me. You just have to figure out what your end result is going to be with you car. Do you want just little mods or do ones. It just really what you want your car to do. Everyone on this forum have unique cars that they wanted. Just remember if you do a any stand alone don't short cut it. That will hurt you in the end I hope this is some help to you in making a decision

Standalone for $1500 is NOT expensive, espesially a plug and play one.
P.S. I love my Haltech!
Please don't let my low post count fool you. I know a thing or two. Receipt below is for a Sprint 500 with custom built patch loom for a 96 Miata. A Protege would be about $125 more expensive because of the increased price of the extension loom that the patch harness would be based on. However, my point remains. $1500 is a little steep. 
AEm ems-4? It comes with the fuses and a direct wideband connector if you have a current AEm wideband. It also has a few more features than the sprint 500. I also hear the sprint 500 is a good product. Every one claiming this or that is better prove it. Besides that it's all talk.
^ Agree with that. There is really nothing in the sub $1000 price range, other than maybe Megasquirt, that offers the features of the EMS-4. I've installed and used most of the major brands. Over the last few years they have all made such large strides in quality, ease of use, and features for the money. A lot of good choices on the market right now.
