I see what you did there!!!!

:p

Hey guys, I've got the awesome opportunity to go see the LAST Space Shuttle launch next month. I need to rent a lens for it, but am not sure what to get. I'll be anywhere between 9-13 miles away, so I'm going to need some reach. I was thinking the 100-400mm L-glass with a 1.4x extender (not the 2.0 so i don't lose too many f/stops). Money wise, it makes the most sense, but also gives me the ability to adjust my range as opposed to having a fixed focal-length lens.

Any other ideas?

When reading the manual for the 80-400 Nikkor it said not to use telephoto extenders, so be sure to take that into account.

But to give you a quick idea here is a shot of a 375 foot building from about 6.7 miles away. That is at 400mm, but it is mounted to my D80 so it has a crop factor added to it I believe it is actually 600mm.

Wish I would of had a haze filter.

I really do not see any other viable options for that range.

Get that 800!!! http://www.the-digital-picture.com/reviews/Canon-EF-800mm-f-5.6-L-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx
We don't need far away shots of that!

Vocko - nice shots dude. I like the wet tunnel one. Although maybe I feel that it might be better if you were closer to the ground.

I've always wanted to try out the 100-400 with the 1.4 extender. I've seen pics with the 100-400 and the 1.4+2.0x extenders stacked, and they're not horrible.

I say go for the 100-400 and the 1.4x... or better yet, just get the 400 f/5.6 and the 1.4x... that way you can use it wide open. with the 100-400 and the 1.4, you're going to want to use it at about f/11, which is going to make your rig SLOOWWWWWW.

Yeah, that's my fear too. The 1.4x drops your f/stop by 1 level? Some people are saying there's going to be another shuttle launch after this one, so I might have time to experiment with both... we'll see

Well $200+ for 3 days is a bit much for a lens rental. I'll see what I can scrounge!

I saw you talking about maybe having another shuttle launch. I say grab the opportunity now and do it right the first time. Because there might NOT be another one right? This one is for sure. Do it!

1.4 kills 1 stop of light so yes your "wide open" aperture goes from f/5.6 to f/8. You lose 2 stops with the 2x. Also, while "ok" wide open, the 100-400 really shines at f/8. That's not a bad thing in my book, because f/5.6 at 400mm gives a usually too shallow depth of field. For the photos you're taking, that's not going to be an issue though, since you're going to be close to infinity. With the TC you'll definitely want to stop down to get more sharpness. At f/11, you're already starting to see your sharpness go away due to refraction though. All that is why I say that you should consider the 400mm prime. That way, you'll still have 2 focal lengths (400mm and 560mm), and you'll have a combo that you can use wide open.

Just my 2 cents. I have never tried the 100-400 with a TC, but I am really curious how it will work. You'll have to let us know!
