I am a a true road warrior and I travel many miles from state to state (work). I need to find a suitable radar detector for my Mazda. Any input or suggestions would be enormously appreciated. Thanks!

Also, my Mazda 3 engine disconnects itself from the manual transmission (safety i reckon) when I go above 120mph. Is there a way to disable that? I took my car to the autobahn and max was about 120mph.

For the radar detector it all depends on how much you are willing to spend. You can get a Valentine 1 or a higher model Beltronics or Escort for around $500. You could also get a lower model Beltronics or Escort for around $300.

I have a valentine 1 and would never go with anything else. Absolutely love it. Not to mention if there is an update, or better one that comes out, they use the same housing, just send in and upgrade the internals.

And by disconnects, do you mean it pops outta gear? Or are you hitting a governor?

Thanks for the reply guys. I will get a Valentine 1 (sufficient). By disconnect, i mean it pops out of gear and if it slows down (i am pushing the gas still)... it will "reconnect". Suffice to say, it will never pass 120mph.

"I need a radar detector" and "I can't get my car past 120MPH" in the same thread.

I smell a Darwin award...

so you travel from STATE to STATE and are also on the Autobahn? And your transmission disconnects at 120mph... Scary.
Cars are electronically limited... your car is still in gear and hasn't disconnected anything. You may also get more help in the standard Mazda 3 forum... our cars go far past 120 mph... on the autobahn

I should have clarified: I bring my car with me when I have an extended contract at home or overseas. Is there a way to have my Mazda NOT electronically limited? I'll peruse the standard Mazda 3 forum.. ty.

It's not coming out of gear. It's an electronic limiter. Speed limiter hysteresis. When you hit 120 it will cut off all throttle control. Meaning your foot may be down, but the computer is cutting it off completely. When you hit 120, it won't give throttle control back until you slow down the amount it's "tuned" for. Usually 5-10 mph. Then you can go back to 120 and repeat. If you want it off, find a way to get it tuned out, or get a different car.

I agree. I have a Bel RX-65 in all four cars. The only thing they don't do well (and none do) is laser. If you're lucky, you'll get the bounce off some other car. Otherwise, when the laser alert goes off, you're done. As for radar, though, they work very well.

Yeah, I think you'll have to be prepared to spend thousands to do laser battle.
