I'm afraid I have to agree. That pic can be taken with a cell phone and be just fine IMO.

but, to the point of wanting to improve nature and portrait photography, you could pick up a decent, though older DSLR like my 20D with the kit lens, a card, and a battery for $500 relatively easily. I'd suggest adding a Canon 50mm 1.8, which you should be able to keep in the budget. The bonus of the DSLR is you can upgrade various pieces of the kit as your abilities and budget grow without having to basically make a leap, or completely change your equipment setup. I don't own any expensive glass as it stands now, but if I keep at the hobby and get to the point where its worth it, I will. After that, I can start looking at upgrading bodies as well. Then there is lighting to keep in mind, etc.

This is just a $60 camera so my pics might not look as nice as your $2000 worth of equipment. Plus I'm just starting to get into this type of stuff.

white balance is WAY off, and I wouldn't suggest corrugated cardboard as a good backdrop.

Suggest looking for an older Nikon D50, D40x, D60. Canon 30D, XTi, XT. those would get you well under the 500 dollar budget. Including the kit lens

EDM6-zoom zoom - I think you should identify what you want to get from photography before you purchase a camera. If you are just looking for something to snap pictures of family, random nature, etc. you might be best off purchasing a point and shoot type camera (like the Coolpix you mentioned).

If you want to turn this into a hobby it might be worth it for you to pick up an entry level DSLR to use while you learn and explore your newfound hobby.

Judging by the couple of pictures that you posted it looks to me like you would be satisfied with a p&s or maybe even an advanced p&s that has a lot of the functionality of a DSLR so that you can play around with settings and get creative if you want. But just remember it doesn't matter what camera you use. I'm sure there are photographers out there that can produce better pictures with a disposable camera than I can with my DSLR.

Did you get off camera lighting gear yet? Too much shadow on her left side.

I have a Nikon D40, great starter camera. might be willing to sell it. 18-55, and 55-200 lenses with it.

I used a panel off my desktop computer LOL. Wrapped with tin foil. Done.

Ya I agree too much shadow but it's all good. Pic came out pretty good. And one doesn't need OCF. He can use a on camera flash hitting a reflector. Should fill that in nicely.

Speaking of reflectors I used my sun screen that goes up in my windshield!! and its Mazda too so thats bonus points right?
