Approaching 93,000 miles and I am due for a brake pad change. What do you recommend?

First time around and I was told by two mechanics I could let the ones that came with the car go further. Quite obvious that all those miles are basically highway. Mazda is telling me I need new front pads...the dealer in Butler PA is totally useless as I was informed they could get me the parts in 7 days.

So I took the car back so I could get the job done locally. I was thinking about replacing the front and rears with Hawk HPS Pads...should I do it? Rotors look great....should I order anything else?

You will be happy with those pads. Buy them.
If the rotors are good, then thats all you should need. However, I'm a little skeptical that the rotors are ok. But hey, I'm not looking at them.

if the rotors have never been turned they are more than due. I guarantee by that mileage they would need it.
if not needed, its a good idea to get a correctly bedded pad... its fairly cheap to resurface anyway.

the hawk HPS pads are great pads. i run em track & street.
Make sure to read up on how to properly bed them after install.

Ok, like yours, mine too is in the 90's lol. Um Brake pads check got it, but what about rotors??? What do you reccommend? I requested a qoute from a company called Rotorpros.com for my 2006 MPS6. The replied for ALL 4 corners; the rotors, the brake pads, and brake lines for only $400 SHIPPED... and =\ ...What do you think? Anybody every hear of this company/used their products. The rotors are also Drilled And Slotted with painted red brake pads.....i went onto mitsubishi forums and a lot of people there use them and love them...What about our heavier, more loaded options, daily driver?

Thanks for all the feedback. Rotors ok? All I can say is that I see/feel no lines (smooth as a babies ass) on all (4) outers....most are anywhere's from 4 to 6/ 32 left

I guess I'll find out on Friday when I have the pads installed....worst case scenario is I take the car back and get some nice lines and rotors to compliment the investment. I'll be sure to read the bedding instructions...you've reminded me and it was in bright red letters on the website I purchased them from.

Very interesting... I had never heard of these guys until right now. It would have been helpful to hear about them several months ago when I replaced rotors and pads on all four corners.

I, too, just did some Internet forum "research" on Rotorpros and found no bad press, really. The one piece of advice that I will give you is to specifically request non-drilled, non-slotted rotors. The only thing I would worry about is them using regular rotors and taking a drill press or router/Dremel to them to make 'em look "dope".

bingo bango!! its what i use with my HPS pads.
light track duty they do fine. I may get em custom slotted if i track more nxt year.

Mazda and my mechanic expressed no concerns regarding the rotors and the Hawks went on with no problem. The calipers look fugly though. I may consider do a paint job on them like I did when I owned the RX-8. I'll document the process.

I'll update the board as to my experience with these brakes as time goes on. Thanks for the feedback.

rotorpros.net has very high quality stuff.. i ordered slotted rotors from them about 3 years ago and havent had any issues with the rotors.. i have also referred many people to them and never heard any complaints. A friend of mine who has a BT ms6 got drilled and slotted rotors and has had no issues either

Well it appears that the contact area on these brakes is much smaller than the OEM's.....there is about a 1/2 inch thin line of rust accruing on the outer edge of the rotors (fronts). Any suggestions outside getting new rotors? Should I have any safety concerns?

did you buy the car with these pads already on? almost sounds like they were the incorrect pad size for the car.

if thats the case, you should definitly replace the pads... as for rotors, like i said you will HAVE to either resurface or replace them at that mileage. no option. Resurfacing is cheap, as long as the thickness of the rotor is still within spec. make sure the place that cuts em for you KNOWS or can find out the rotor specs for the MS6.

If he finds they ARE under spec width, than you are SOL and MUST buy new rotors.

They are Hawk HSP on MazdaSpeed OEM rotors...I need to stress about 60000 of those 93000 miles were highway. When I replace the fronts they were at 6/32 and 7/32. The rear brakes fit perfectly. I've included a pic to demonstrate. Car brakes great with no vibration at this point.

never realized about teh pad coverage. i have HPS pads too.
material-wise it seems to do just fine.

again, the life of that rotor no matter the TYPE of miles SHOULD get resurfacing when you went to new pads. without, the pads could end up getting grooved due to the way the old pads ran on the rotor. resurfacing cuts a nice fresh flat surface for new ungrooved pads.
the minimum spec thickness of the rotor needs to be about ~0.906 inches or 23mm.
It sounds like you already rpleaced the pads withouth resurfacing the rotors... which is fine, but just understand you run the risk of grooving or bad glazing effect which will lead to long term issues with braking or faster wear & tear.

eitehr way sounds like this matter is taken care of. lol
