What have you done to your Mazda6 today?

yeah ever since last week, seems the new update has slowed the site way down.. such a bummer.

$635 dollars holy s***!!! pics of ding/dent?? thats alot of cash if its small.

ahh ok they must be replacing your hood then.. which is a smart idea. i mean you could body work that and considering its VRM the paint may not look quite right, but if they start from scratch with a new hood and the paint comes out right it'll look better. i wouldnt say it'll look 100% perfect VRM is a hard color to get right.

cost of a new hood

Nope. No new hood. I have the full estimate right here. 10.4 hours of labor and $160 in materials.

This is the same place that I used when I my car got keyed last year. They do really good work and they treated me pretty well back then, but this seems pretty ridiculous.

I should scan the estimate and post it on here...

i just don't see how that could take 10.4 hours to fix.. i dunno man its your call but if it were me id say 6 or less hours. the labor charge per hour ratio is right $40 bucks is normal, i do think they are overcharging you 4 hours though, but that is an estimate, not actual. and the paint isn't cheap, so the materials is spot on.

one quick question, is the shop your going too using a solventborne system or waterborne system??

heres alittle information on it, although it says all shops would be required to switch over, most haven't.. i think the new date is Jan 2012. PPG is the best system out their for waterborne IMHO..

waterborne is way better for the enviorment and there's a good reason to swtich over, so if the shop has recently switched over they may try to subtly pass that cost to its customers.

I went in and had the oil changed this morning on the way in to work. The guys at the Jiffy Lube were all drooling over it and I could hear one guy reciting specs. It made me pretty happy to see someone else get really excited about the car, kind of made me appreciate it more.

The bad news is that he said that the PTO and the rear diff are both leaking slightly, although they both seemed to have the proper levels of fluid. How bad is this? I'm going to see if I still have warranty left on those, but I may not. Are they critical immediate-fix items, or can they wait a little while? I seem to remember them both being fairly common. Bad seals maybe?

rear diff seal for sure, i replaced mine a few months back... save yourself the money, buy the seal and do it yourself thats 200-300 dollars saved.

its really not that difficult if you know which side of the diff is leaking, mine was driver side just dissasembled the suspension, pulled the axle, replace seal, popped axle back in, refilled diff fluid, and re assembled errything. however, if you DO have warrant still, get it done asap along with the PTO...

and while your at it might as well check for the clutch TSB eh?

Thanks batou. Clutch TSB was done before I took ownership a couple years ago. I think my warranty is out but I'll call the dealer to see if I can get those two done still if not, then I guess I'll order the seals and have a friend's shop do them.

And yeah, I wouldn't go to Jiffy again, but it was the only one open at 8am and on my way to work so I impulsively went in.

Wow Jay, that seems really high. Obviously, they're going to repaint the whole hood, but 10 hours of labor seems steep to me. I'd definitely shop around, it almost sounds like they highballed the quote to avoid the job.

OJ, good luck with the seal replacement. You may want to do both if you're worried that the other is questionable.

Jay,
for that price might be the perfect time to get a carbon fiber hood?
I'm not a fan of them, but maybe you are?

I thought about that, but the least expensive place I could find for the CF hood is SU, and they want almost $900 shipped.

At this point, I've given the plate number (I hope I copied it down correctly...) to an LEO friend of mine. She's working on tracking down a name/address/phone number of the carrier company. I may go out today or Monday and see what other shops in the area tell me.

got the AUX mod installed yesterday :) Sadly, I drilled my first hole in the wrong spot and had to drill another :(
