24000km (1500 mile) service

Just wondering how necessary this is. The extra things there asking for beyond a standard oil change is an inspection and lubrication of the breaks, and inspection of the A/C.

From what I've learned the hard part and possibly more important part is the break lubrication, as breaks will sometimes seize. The only problem is here in Canada I've been quoted between 185 and 230 to get this done at a dealership.

I was thinking that in order to save my warranty and $$$ I'd get it done at a private garage who have told me it'll cost less than $100 for them to do it.

I was just wondering what you recommended? dealer, private garage, just get an oil change and skip the extra service? How who'd those different options effect the warranty?

Paid 200 for the 24000km service at the dealer and 40 bucks for the 32000km service.
Warranty is only around for another year (bumper to bumper), so I will spring for the next few services at the dealer.

Another option would be to ask the dealer how much it would be for only lubrication of the brakes and an AC inspection, then have that done. Then do the oil change elsewhere. With my Honda I found that the dealer would charge more for work in a bundle (like a 24,000km service) than if you were to get prices for the individual components of the work.

Personally, I would just go to an independent but certified mechanic and have a detailed receipt telling what they did (which would match what is in the owner's manual) but I'm in the US and here the dealer can't void a warranty if you have the work done by a mechanic other than the dealer. I don't know about Canada.

Just wondering how necessary this is…inspection and lubrication of the breaks, and inspection of the A/C…

These two services are not necessary at 1,500 miles or 15,000 miles for that matter; perhaps when you hit 60,000 miles so you can have other components checked at the same time. I understand not everyone knows the basic mechanics of a car but they are really taking you for a ride. Go back and ask them to list exactly what services they are performing -I am very curious.

For the breaks, the only thing they ‘lub’ are the caliper sliding pins. The factory petroleum grease should not be dry at 1,500 or 15,000 miles. If you truly are concerns, have them ‘re-lubed’ when you have you brakes done –two birds with one stone instead of paying for labor to just ‘re-lub’…

For A/C what the heck are they expecting you to pay for?? If you AC feels weak, it would still be under factory warrantee to have checked and fixed. Why would you pay some to check something that is covered under warrantee?... If you are concerned and must know your AC is fully charged, you can go to Walmat/Kmart/whatever mart/department store and pick up an AC test kit for $10-$20 and do it yourself. If you know how to plug something in, you can do it –only talking about checking. R134a systems are easier to work with than the older R12 (mumbojumbo for the newer AC system have easier connectors to work with).
