Cabin Air filter?

It makes me wonder why he went through all the work... Why not just cut out the opening? Perhaps the inside of our housing doesn't have "ridges" to hold the filter in place? Maybe it's not as easy as just cutting out the opening (though I doubt that's the case).

someone parting out their car should really "look" into it and see

He did it this way because Edwin does things by the book. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but you'd be hard pressed to get him to do an "off the cuff" mod like that.

Well if I can source the bracket and filter, I'll take a look. This seems like a great mod, and my car is always dusty as hell inside.

err, all part numbers are listed there already... Or not?

The few parts you need are:
GE6T-61-J02 AC evaporator lower half case
TC86-61-J31 AC evaporator case filter plug
CB12-61-J6X aldehyde filter
J001-50-171 license plate holder bracket (believe it or not, this part works perfectly with this setup.. more later)
metric size license plate bolt that fits the bracket
2 suitable size self tapping screws
set of finisher washers

all of those parts EXCEPT for the aldehyde filter can be purchased at any local Mazda dealer.. the filter you *must* import from Europe... however, if you are just content with a normal pollen filter, you can order GE6T-61-J6X locally and it's half the price of the aldehyde filter.... funny enough, the lower half case is not used on ANY car sold in the US... it just happens so mazda mistakenly put it in their US parts database to let everyone use it to their advantage

EDIT: at the time of writting, I omitted 3 additional parts you'll need
GA5R-61-J04 seal
GE4T-61-J05 seal
GE4T-61-J29 protector
details on post 19. Negatize also recently discovered that his evaporator unit is completely different from mine because his is a 99 model. It turns out that the filter conversion will ONLY work on 2000+ models. If you have a 99, then you'll have to upgrade to the newer (and more efficient/reliable) evaporator design. Details for that are in the FAQ. The entire evaporator unit WITH filter is orderable from ANY US dealer!

He gives the parts number for the smaller of the two brackets (J001-50-171) but not the larger one that actually holds the filter in place.

"#%# i forgot to look for numbers. Ill try tomorrow...

edit: didnt get it, what part u mean?
Thats all there is.

soooo... has anyone except TheMan actually done this. This sounds like a good winter project when I could go without the AC for a little bit while installing the filter. Relatively cheap too. I'm in NYC and allergy season is like a kick in the face after going a couple months with no pollen. Plus all the smog. And the NJ Turnpike ('nuf said).

I had no idea we didn't have a cabin filter at all, but my dash does get irritatingly dusty now that I think about it.

this would be a really cool small project with great improvement. as long as the replacement filter are easy and cheap finds. someone should really try this and post back.

I think probably you cabin air filter located on the passenger side under the hood next to the fire wall (near the back of the glove box) under the cover plate and rain shield. If I'm not mistaken.

No, we don't have one. That has been the point of this entire thread. (stooges)

Does anyone think that making your own cabin air filter from a furnace filter is a good thing, rather then purchasing it from other places or dealerships? My vehicle is starting to cause me a lot of problems, and I am looking for easy, less price ways to solve a few of my problems.

The furnace filter was just an idea since it can be cut into any shape to fit the space available. However it looks as though you can purchase an actual cabin filter that will fit so the best solution is to go with that i would say. I totally forgot about this actually, i should really try it!
