After 2 years of ownership I just discovered my trip computer... FML

I remember reading a thread about "Unlocking the Trip Computer". There were a bunch of steps to do it and I thought they said it wouldn't work on the 08+ so I never looked into it any more. This morning on my way to work I noticed the "info" button on my head unit. I've had the car for 2 years and never pressed it. I pressed it and the trip computer magically showed up on the head unit display. (uhm)

Pretty neat little feature.

Edit: Found Thread. WTF is this s***?

Requirements:
- Mazda3 (2006-2007 it seems) with steering wheel audio controls (can be i, s, or Mazdaspeed)

Steps:

- Before you start the engine, hold the CD and AM/FM buttons.
- Start the engine (keep holding the CD and AM/FM buttons).
- After a few seconds, you should see the display read "DIS ON" (driver information system)
- Stop the engine.
- Start the engine again.
- Touch the SET button (':00' button on 2008 including Mazdaspeed3) to see the trip computer.
- Touch the TIME button to see the time.

Your owner’s manual explains how to use the trip computer. With the ignition switch ON, press the SET button (manual says INFO button) to cycle through these 4 options.

- CONSUM CUR: Current fuel economy (calculated every 2 seconds)
- CONSUM AV: Average fuel economy (since battery was connected or resetting the trip computer, displayed every minute, to clear: hold SET for 1+ seconds until the display clears)
- REMNG: Distance you can travel on remaining fuel (must add more than 5.3 gallons to reset it)
- AV: Average vehicle speed (displayed every 10 seconds, to clear: hold SET for 1+ seconds until display clears)

What?! I didn't know this! FML also!

Yeah I definitely didn't do any of that voodoo to get it to work either. Was just driving and pressed INFO. Let me know if yours works the same way. If it doesn't work, the only thing I can think of is my headunit was replaced under warranty a month into owning it because of the common volume issue.

I remember reading that for the sports you could unlock the trip computer that was in the GT's. I had tried it on the 08.5 after having the head unit replaced for the random volume TSB and the combo never worked for me.

If you have the GT shouldn't you just be able to press INFO and get the trip computer?

Yes, that's what I did, but wasn't aware I could do that until this morning. I thought you had to do a bunch of steps to "unlock" it, so I never attempted it.

Nothing to unlock when it is just a feature included with the car. :-) That's (one of the reasons) why you paid the extra money for the GT.

I have an 08.5 Sport so I'm SOL on the trip computer.

everyone with a GT and didnt know this is a dang FOOL!!!!!!!!!!!11!one!!!!!

what is the common volume issue w/ the headunit?

Not sure if I am imagining it but the radio used to seem 'better' somehow, but now it is like the sound quality has decreased.

thx

Not sure. I know for a while I could get barely any sound and then I realized that after I disconnected my battery, all the settings were back to default so I only had to turn back up the bass and terrible and so forth.

- - - so is there no way to unlock the trip in a non GT 08.5?

lol, well on mine, you have to hold the button down for like 7 seconds for it work, so it took me forever to figure out how to use it hahaha

Don't think so. Sounds like Mazda finally got smart and disabled it on the new units they put in for 08.5 cars.

I have seen one guy who claims to have gotten the trick to work on an 08.5, but he had his stereo replaced by the dealer, and presumably got an earlier model (or GT model) radio installed in it's place.

I use it when I'm low on gas and I want to know how far I can drive until it's empty. Not the most reliable, I know, but better than nothing!

Has anyone noticed this? The other day I was driving and the had a CD by Chevelle playing and suddenly I noticed it was displaying the name of the album as well as the song that was playing. I noticed it for a few other CDs as well. Now it seems to have stopped again. Im not sure if I changed a setting or something but it was cool. I wish it would do it again.

With Mp3 cd's it will display all that info (Song, artist, track) on the display. You choose what you want to display using the knob to the lower right of the volume knob. Maybe certain normal CD's do the same thing. I don't know, I haven't seen that. Hardly ever use cd's anymore.

This was with a regular CD... I fear change and still prefer them to them confounded MP3/ipod things you kids use to play jungle music these days. Back in 2000 ish someone invented the technology to put album and track names on CDs. Certain CD players support it. It never caught on much as only about 1 in 10 CDs uses this technology. I have a super sweet soney discman from back in the day that had that built into the little clip on controller it came with.

So anyhow its the knob on the right that controls the music display? I will have to check that out.

Thanks for sharing, worked like a charm on my new-to-me '07. FWIW there's no need to start the car, just replace those steps with "turn the ignition switch to the on position".
