I present to you, the Passion5

So I'm finally finishing up with all of parts buying and thought I'd throw a few pictures up. I really haven't done much with the car but I'm ready to move toward getting the motor in. I did however strip all of the body filler out of the roof channels; which actually wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, did all of it in about 20min. Sadly I found a fair amount of rust, but after seeing the rest of the car and the way the body work was done, I was expecting the worst. The chosen method to fix was surprising though; they stripped most of the paint from the channels, but didn't weld the holes for the roof rack shut, instead just filled it with the body filler. On top of the body filler was a layer of fiberglass, which I can only assume was to try and keep the water out (epic fail). After the layer of fiberglass was more filler (YAY!!!!!!!) Seriously, who hates the roof rack that much? I even managed to pull the right side filler out in one piece, see it against the car...

Below are pictures of what I've collected thus far, you can probably recognize most of it from the pictures, but I'll throw a list near the bottom of the page. Enjoy, let me know what your thoughts are on the direction of the project and if you have any questions/suggestions. I also have a ton of stuff stored in the P5, the wife already isn't very happy my taking over the guest bedroom, but the p5 only holds so much :D.

I do not understand these owners. He could of just left the car the way it was and it would of been in better condition. What is the point of modding a car to make it worse?

Anyway, props to you man for cleaning this car up. I hope it comes out sick!

Nice. KL-ZE P5. I tuned in. You have some work cut out for you but nothing a little Duck Tape cant fix.

It really is a ton of work, but I was really drawn to the car, I guess I was sad to see a unique car like the P5 meet such fate as the passion5 has. I'm really fighting the urge to paint it before the motor goes in. It's such a bad job, really cheap paint and poor prep, over spray everywhere and paint in places it really shouldn't be. I know that if I paint it first I'll screw it up putting the motor in or doing something else along the way. Really hate to blast down the road in a Now-Or-Later P5, but at least it won't be with the stock FS. I think it's going yellow again, a nice shade of sunburst yellow, hopefully it turns out well. I will be putting this swap together with one wiring harness and ECU. Should be a good project, I'll document everything for guys trying to do this in the future.

OMG sub'd

i really wanna know how much body work will have to be done to fit a KLZE into a P5...it's been my goal but really haven't found any successful swaps...I've found a lot of sites but not really anything that focuses on just that. anyway good luck to you bro! keep us posted (2thumbs)

there are a few swaps on here already that are running fine. there is a regular protege too. i think the mounting locations are identical.

damn this is the worst iv seen in a minute, lol

i think if you paint to def go with a color you create, some custom color, nothing factory.

GOOD LUCK

...i really wanna know how much body work will have to be done to fit a KLZE into a P5...

No body work is required to transplant into any of the bj chassis cars. The main differences are the mounts/axles depending on what motor you are starting out with. If starting with the protege5, the KL uses all of the stock mounts, thus it physically is a bolt in motor. You can even use your stock driveshafts. You must get a KL transmission, or a KL bellhousing to use on your p5 transmission. You'll also need the halfshaft from a 93 626/mx6 auto/manual doesn't matter.

As always the wiring seems to be everyones biggest complaint, I'm hoping to shed some light and come up with an alternate option to the two ecu solution.

Nice collection of parts and excellent documentation! Keep up it rolling and get er done. I love seeing people save cars and return them to awesomness. you rock mang.

That's awesome! I'll check this thread as often as I can to see your progress. The only problem I have is that my car is semi-auto(nuts)

Manual swap isn't that difficult, actually its probably one of the less tedious installs if you're going to do a KL swap. I also have a ledger to keep track of the total build cost so you can have a better idea of my total investment and better weigh your options between Turbo/NA/FSZE/KLDE/KLZE/etc. I'll see about putting into google docs for you guys to check out. I also want to reformat the thread a bit to make it easier to follow along, maybe a table of contents, seperate photo galleries, build list with doner parts info; what would you guys find most beneficial if looking for info?

A couple of swap threads for you

KLZE straight neck swap

Also, I don't know what your plans are for the roof channels but here is a new roof rack on ebay.

Thanks for the links! I've been looking into this for about a year and a half now and just might have exhausted all of my resources on the web :D. Sadly there just is not enough info going around to really create a solid FAQ. I've also yet to find anyone running solely the KL ECU, but can't seem to find a solid reason as to why; other than it appears to be easier that way. I've already aquired the harness and ecu from both cars and I've also been very active in researching on the mx-6/probe/626 boards.

And thanks for the tip on the roof rack, I put a bid on it, hopefully no one else outbids me, I really dont have the funds for a $100+ setup. The plan was either the roof rack, or the weather strips, whichever was easier/cheaper to find.

impo I think that a table of contents would help out a lot

Thanks, here's an example of one I did for my SE-R a while ago...sadly I had to ditch the car before I really got a chance to get involved with it.

Hey are you looking for a tail light? I have both of mine boxed up in my basement. They've been in nice little boxes for close to three years now if not longer. Perfect condition.
