Check Engine light on

Hello,

Got a call from the wife telling me the CEL came on on our 2009 M5 GT at 13k miles. Did some looking around for anything loose, checked the gas cap but no joy. Will be making an appt with the dealers but perhaps someone might have suggestions on what else to check? Thanks.

Edit. Borrowed my friend's code reader and I got a P0455 - Evaporative Emissions Leak. Anyone have this issue? Is it something that I can replace or does it require a trip to the dealer? Thanks.

Stop @ autozone (& most other auto parts stores), they will read the code for you, free of charge.

There's no telling what's wrong without knowing the code.

I take it she didn't indicate any problems or noticeable differences in performance? Isn't there a gas cap light that's separate from the CEL? My Focus has a gas cap light so I'm just wondering.

Where is the obdii port? Just got a 2009 Sport and have a reader but haven't looked for the port. Would be nice to know is cel came on (but hopefully not - knock on wood).

The port is on the top inside part of the cubby that is to the lower left of the steering wheel.

LOL. First thing I asked her when she called. Asked her to describe. Verified when I got home.

Yea. Nice driving the 5 on the a-bahn. The 5 is smooth and stable at 100mph. Even better with cruise con on.(drive)

I edited my initial post and added the code. The code was P0455 Evap Leak. I did code searching in the forum and decided to clear the code and see if it comes back.

I agree with KBrian, only 13K on it, ask dealer to take a look.

That code says it's a "gross" leak, not a minor leak... I'd be willing to bet the gas cap wasn't put back on correctly, or at all. Clearing it will probably be fine.

Just a thought, could this error code be thrown if the vehicle was refueled without shutting the car motor off?

Not avoiding the dealer necessarily. If the CEL comes back, it'll be going to the dealer. Based on my forum research and wife's testimony that she may have not tightened the gas cap the day before, decided to clear the code. AFAIK, they don't do loaners in Germany. At least not with BMW, Ford, Mazda, and Toyota. They'll provide a rental.
