WARNING: I personally accepted the risk of possible damage to my head unit using the GEA1-79-970 with my iPhone 3G. Everything stated here-in should be done with the understanding that using the GEA1-79-970 in a way other than what is recommended by Mazda or Apple is at your own risk.

So I took a chance and picked up the GEA1-79-970 cable although it is not formally certified to work with iPhone. Turns out it works pretty well. I get the Airplane mode nag screen stating that the accessory was not designed to work with iPhone (I choose "no"). I also have to manually select the dock from the iPhone list of connections when the car is first started and the head unit is set to "iPod" mode (via multiple presses of the CD/Aux button) because the iPhone will automatically connect to the Mazda MID/Display via A2DP Bluetooth as part of it's handsfree pairing. Unfortunately there is no way (I've found) to disable the A2DP portion of Bluetooth on the iPhone or via the Mazda Head unit.

Overall it works pretty well, though there are a few "glitches" that I'm still attempting to root cause.

- Receiving or accepting a call via bluetooth can cause the iPhone to get confused when the headunit switches back to iPod after the call, resulting in a "Check Device" error on the Mazda head unit. I believe this error is connected to some sort of timeout on the iPhone or head unit. For instance I received the "Check Device" error after a ~30 second call but did not receive it after a ~10 second call. Still trying to narrow the cause down.

- You need to boot the iPhone before booting the headunit into iPod mode otherwise the iPhone may never allow you to switch from A2DP Bluetooth to the dock connector.

- I've had a couple of instances where the iPhone said it was playing back via the dock connection but I didn't get any sound. Toggling between Bluetooth and the iPod via the Mazda Head unit seemed to correct this.

I've been using the set-up for the last week with no ill-effects other than what has been stated above. The user interface via the Mazda/Clarion head unit is pretty nice with excellent coverage of album info and control via head-unit and steering wheel. I've also not experience any iPhone GSM-related noise throught he radio. This of course may change depending on your area or if another electronic devices in close proximity to your car or iPhone.

That's all for now.

Again everything I've described here has been stated knowing that I used the GEA1-79-970 with the iPhone at my own risk. Anyone who attempts the same should do so with the understanding that you may void your Mazda Warranty.

Sorry to bump a REALLY old thread..but does the C9F7-V6-029 cable with the 2010 head unit support album art by chance, or does it just display artist, song and album info via on-screen text ?

Thanks...
