Should I be looking to replace my shock/struts?

currently my car has 40+k on it and i'm getting a weird banging noise in the rear driver's side. almost like theres somthing banging in the trunk. i haven't done anything to the car other than normal stuff (oil changes, filters, etc.)
so i'm not looking to go nuts on a new suspention, but i'm willing to move away from stock.
just looking for some info.

It could just be a loose sway bar link, but I would most definitely change the dampers anyway. They weren't very good when you bought the car, and 40,000 miles hasn't helped them!

Mine are blown and make the clunking noise in back. Check to see if oil is leaking out of them. I'm sure it probably is. You can have that replaced under warranty probably.

depends on if he bought an extended warranty, 'cause his bumper to bumper ended at 36k...
