Quieter Exhaust

How much material did you use? Did you use Dynamat, or something else? Any installation or interior removal/installation tips?

That seems like it'd really help... 5db is huge.

Yeah, it's a bit louder than other cars, nothing like the stock Suby's or Evo's though - I'm going for louder/grumblier myself with the Turbo XS CBE.

Not the best thought, but if you can find someone that deleted the muffler on theirs (like me - but the shop tossed it), see about replacing one of the resonators with it (if there's room in the undertray).

Sound deadening mat installed. It definitely helped. Road noise from the rear wheelwells really got quiet. The exhaust drone is a little better too.

Ok, got my resonator swapped out to the magnaflow one.

I took some sound measurements with a DB meter. I got it up to about 4,000RPM then leave it in gear and coast down to decelerate trying to see where it was the loudest. All going highway speeds. The loudest RPM range is around 2,500 RPM it was hitting 90DB.
That's the "Drone zone"!
After sound deadening mat it was peaking at 85 DB
After the resonator was installed it still peaked at 2,500 RPM around 80DB but it was actually milder all around but still unmistakably throaty and cool like mazda wanted it to.

I'd consider this mission accomplished. No more headaches on long trips.

Just driving with the wheel noise on the highway is around 70 to 75DB to give you an idea.

Looks good.

Did you install the Magnaflow yourself or did you have an exhaust shop do it for you?
If you did it yourself it looks like you used some kind of sealant where the clamps are, what did you use.

Got my Magnaflow 12616 about 2 weeks ago, but havent got around to installing it yet. I think I am just going to take it somewhere and have them weld it up. I'll post up with my impressions after I get it done.
To the guys that did this, did you notice any changes to your LTFT after doing this?

Got it installed today.
Total with part, shipping and install labor $157.30. Guy charged me $95 for install, Im sure you could get it cheaper, it took him 15-20 mins from start to finish.

The drone is gone, all you hear now when engine braking is a very muffled burble.
The car is much quieter when cruising, and yet still has some growl when getting on it.
Also, that annoying exhaust noise when the A/C compressor kicks in at idle is gone .

Perfect mod for me, it did exactly what I wanted, and much cheaper than a new catback.

Perfect! I recommend to anyone who would like to tone down the drone for cheap.
Made my car even more of a sleeper.

This is great info guys. I'm OK with the stock exhaust but the drone has always bugged me since the first test drive. I overlooked it in relation to the greatness of the overall package of this car when I decided to buy it. The WRX I drove at that time had stock exhaust and it was sporty but didn't drone at all. I've had my fill of loud exhaust. You want loud? Try long tube headers, SIDE PIPES with basic glass fiber filling that burns out after 2K miles, and a 408 cubic inch Ford Windsor stroker hooked to it all. Then put the openings about 2 feet from your head pointed straight out the sides of the car and drive next to anything vertical made of concrete or steel like a guard rail or highway divider.

This is a really interesting thread for me. I do not typically have an issue with my car. I do mostly non highway driving. I also typically play my radio pretty high. It was not until recently when I was doing highway driving with my wife that I was bothered by the drone.

With the radio off and at a constant 70-75 the noise is bothersome.

My question for the Florindi is why did you go with the from Magnaflow 14616 instead of the 12616? Both are stainless the 146 is polished. You can't really see it and its about $20 less for the satin?

Ed

I have the magnaflow and its not to loud, the flowmaster 40 series will scream so beware of that

I have the RacingBeat, and with a test pipe, is still quieter than stock. It is a no-drone, well made piece.

Why are people whining about the stock exhaust? Does nobody test-drive vehicles before they buy them anymore? And if you didn't buy it new, shouldn't you research it a bit more? Maybe go to a dealership, drive one!!!! Ask people you know/knew that own one!!! If you bought the car to be inconspicuous, you bought the wrong car!!!!!

Or you can go **** yourself!

I would prefer not to **** myself.
So instead..........
Seeing as you and other posters don't "get it".
I will try and explain simply...... so you can understand...... and so you don't have to read the whole 9 pages of the thread.

We did test drive, we did research, and we did ask people.
We knew that we didn't like the stock exhaust, but also that we liked the car otherwise.
An exhaust is a cheap and easy thing to change. It cost me about $150 for parts and labor to get it sounding the way I wanted to.

It appears you are telling me I should have bought a different car, just because I didn't like the sound of the exhaust...........
That approach sounds very foolish to me, no car is perfect.

Are you telling my you haven't modified your car?
You liked your car perfectly the way it came from the factory?.......

No. I didn't think so!

Looking at your post history it appears that....
http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/search.php?searchid=8587177&pp=25
It is OK for YOU to modify your: wheels, motor mount, sound system, Intake, Downpipe, Exhaust, Turbo Inlet, BOV, suspension, dash trim, wing lip, and add a gauge pod............... which is strange because..............

You say if WE want to change the sound of our exhausts by adding a straight thru stainless Magnaflow, we are "whining" and "bought the wrong car" because we "didn't test drive one", "didn't do enough research", or "ask enough people"..........

You Sir, are an idiot!
A self centered idiot at that!
I am guessing you are 18-22, hope fully your views will change as you become a man.

Regarding your comment " If you bought the car to be inconspicuous, you bought the wrong car!!!!!"
I would disagree, I can think of no other relatively high performance car that has such a low profile. Most non owners cannot tell the difference between the MS3 and MZ3, the differences are there, but most non owners, non enthusiasts.... and more importantly the popo, do not notice them.

EDIT: Your profile says you are 32...... I hope not!

Well said freflyfreak. Those who wish to be disruptive to the intent of this thread should perhaps start their own thread. I'm sure it would probably not exceed one page. An easy read for them.

I contributed to this thread because I am modded, as are many here. My mods included a catless dp and rp, which seriously increased the volume of the exhaust and produced a really harsh drone at 2500 rpm, making the stock drone even worse.

So that's why I searched for and found my solution by adding a third but very large 3 inch straight through reso in the middle of my rp. For others with different mods or concerns about the drone on the stock CBE, the Magnaflow muffler seemed to make sense.

It does pay to read the entire thread, if one is actually looking for information and wanting to make a serioius contribution for the benefit of the whole forum. That's how we learn. Just like in school.

But sadly, we have an increasingly dumbed down society in which actually reading seems to be a problem for some. Too much trouble. But being smart assed is more important to some (and a lot easier) than actually being smart. Go figure.

Thanks, and spot on.
I have Cobb Accessport with custom ATR tune, Cobb SRI, Koni FSD's, Progress Rear stabilizer bar, and Magnaflow Muffler.

Unfortunately too many equate louder with faster.
I cant tell you how many louder cars I have passed at Laguna Seca, in my quiet sleeper wagon.

Plus, no second look from the popo is even better.

I would have gone for the resonated test pipe too if I didn't live in the Republik of Kalifornia, where removal of cats is a hanging offense.

That is a V-band clamp so I can take the exhaust out around the subframe. I didn't want to weld it in place like the stock setup.

Magnaflow 14616 $85
Vibrant 2.5" v band clamp SS $60
Three hours labor $225 from a great fab shop. SS tig welds
$370 total.

Question: If I would have no reason to remove the catback after the mod, would it be better/cheaper to skip the clamp and just go with another weld?

I just had the RB CBE (twin tip=hotness) installed yesterday at RB in Anaheim, CA. (Jim Tanner is awesome!).

5% increase in noise, drone eliminated, 5% increase on butt dyno (also have CAI, Hypertech, etc.).

Perfect solution for low noise, great looks and slightly improved performance/breathability.
