Installed JBarone Short Shift Plate....

i had this plate installed for a week and had to take it out and install the stock one again. i didnt like how shifting felt so heavy and stiff. i luved the short throw of it but the stiffness killed it. just my opinion on the part.

May I suggest, that you put it back in and make the fine tuning adjustments found on my site www.jamiesplanet.com/support. After a couple of weeks you won't even notice the difference from how it felt when it was stock.

Thanks,
Jamie

so i bought one of these from another forum member. let me add it was without the bushings. at first i did not like the shift feel. 2nd gear was the worst. so i was getting some work done at a local shop and they happened to have some solid shifter bushings around. wow what a difference it made. love the way it feels now.

great product. no doubt about it.

for those who are looking to purchase one make sure you go ahead and get the bushings. they are worth it. trust me.

Where did the LED shifter knob come from I would really like to get one that looks sick.

JB sent an upgrade kit to me for testing because he knows that I will give an honest evaluation and he is confident it will be a good one.
Forget boot clearance issues. They are no longer a consideration.
There is only one potential problem due to manufacturing tolerances (Mazda's) and it is easily corrected if it impacts you.
When I installed the plate with the upgrade (I had been running my own Rotus mod) I noticed that second gear did not feel right. It made it into gear, but the throw was off somehow, like it wasn't moving as far as fourth and sixth. I checked under the hood and it turned out that the arm that moves you from one slot to the other was contacting the plate in second gear. I took a prybar (read large screwdriver) and bent it a quarter of an inch towards the driver's fenderwell and presto, it was like a new shifter. The thing is flat out awesome. Now I understand why some people rave about this plate and some are like, "yeah it works, but...". If you bought one and took it out, do yourself a favor, get the upgrade kit, bend that arm just a little bit like I did and you will fall in love with this mod the way everyone else has.

I have been to this website and I can't find it on there. Also everytime I click the contact us button an error box pops up... Ughh wish that this could be a bit easier.

PM Sent.

Are you looking for a short shifter or a short shift plate?

The illuminated short shifter knob is what I am looking for people have been telling me someone on E-Bay makes them so I dunno how I can get one.

I pulled the ashtray but don't see where this helps gain access to anything re: taking off boot..can you clarify things for me a bit

zx2man,
Try this...Very close to butter.

Here is a video and it explains how to tune the shifter. I have done this, I know others who have done this with my plate and with short throw shifters, and believe me my car is so sweet to shift now.

Here's how to get in there. It's so easy.

1 - Remove your shift knob by rotating it counter clockwise
2 - Open the ashtray door and remove the ashtray
3 - Push the boot down and reach under the silver ring surrounding the boot and gently pull up. The cover will pop right off.
4 - Slip the trim with the boot off the shifter and set aside
5 - Reassemble in the reverse order

When making the adjustment to the shifter take your time. Make small adjustments. The end result is well worth the extra time you take to make it shift really nice.

I will post this on my site later today for future reference.

If you need help let me know.

Thanks,

Very nice video explanation Jamie....65Mb from a slow site, so it take time to download. Very detailed though showing the locking clip, up-shaft/down-shaft adjustments.

Right, I have watched that video and it's great..I was trying to see how you accessed this area the quicky way mentioned where you remove the ashtray, et. al. I don't see where removing the ashtray insert does anything and don't see how you can remove the ashtray holder assembly if that is what was meant.

Did you get all that installed yet? Did you get an intake?

Thanks,

To remove the ashtray just slide your hand in there and pull it out. Then after you remove the shift knob reach your hand down in to the shift boot and under the silver trim ring and pull up to remove the console portion with the shift boot attached. Then you will see the whole shifter and how to adjust it.

Could you please clarify just what particular difference the bushes have made? I have just installed the JBarone short shift plate on my MPS6 (as we call them here in OZ) and am very impressed with the shifting feel. I bought the bushes at the same time but am worried installing them may lead to an increase in cabin vibrations? So if anyone can advise I would very much appreciate.

Thanks for your help.

Leon

Hi Leon,
The bushings will take all the play out of the shifter. It will feel more solid and connected to the car. Kind of tough to describe but you'll understand once installed. I've not heard of any issues with increased cabin noise or vibrations after the bushing install. Hopefully others will chime in and comment.

Ah ok and thank you Jamie for the reply. I will go ahead and instal the bushes next chance I get (in a week or so). Main reason I ask is because the shift already feels VERY "direct" with the Short Shift Plate installed and was worried that could bring vibes into the cabin.

I say again that I am very impressed with the way the car shifts now, feels MUCH better than stock. "Notchy" and positive. There IS however a (slight) problem with 2nd to 3rd now... it just doesnt seem to want to go in there "naturally" and has to be "found". In stock trim no gears have ever really been missed in the time I have owned the car but I havent found 3rd on three ocassions in the past 2 days. I hope that may be adjustable via instructions in your vid. If not I will have to persist until I get it right... thats how happy I am with the "positive" feel of SSP.

I should mention that a new Mazda (oem) rear motor mount had just been installed in my car prior to the SSP fit and with that fitted the gear shifting was improved considerably from how the (obviously) tired mount made the car feel. After fitting, the SSP made another HUGE difference to how gear changes feel.

Leon

lol @ Good Day Mate... (it's "gday mate"... but nice try.... heheheh)

Leon,
Do the adjustment shown in the video. The video is for the MPS3 but the concept is very similar. The only difference is the clip. You'll get it I'm sure. It'll fix up the 2nd and 3rd issue you mention. Easy to do while you're in there doing the bushings.

Stupid Americans....Gday Mate!!
