This next picture is very important as I will now reveal the exact throw reduction of both the
JBARONE and JSPEED short throw shift plates.

Out to the shop for installation
Test vehicle is a 2009 MAZDASPEED 3

All measurements were taken from same location of the dash to the center line of the shift knob.

In the stock configuration the shifter travels 2.0" from neutral to the top of
3rd gear. The next shot is of the stock configuration in 3rd gear.
Neutral is at 6.75"
3rd is at 4.75"
Difference of 2.0"

A shot of the JSPEED installed.
IMG_7117.jpg

With the JSPEED installed the shifter travel
from neutral to the top of 3rd is 1.625". The next shot is of the JSPEED in 3rd.
Neutral is at 6.625"
3rd is at 5"
Difference of 1.625"
js3rd.jpg

A shot of JBARONE installed.
IMG_7119.jpg

With the JBARONE installed the shifter travel
from neutral to the top of 3rd is 1.25". The next shot is of the JBARONE in 3rd.
Neutral is at 6.625"
3rd is at 5.375"
Difference of 1.25"

Now the math
JSPEED

1.625 to go in to 3rd gear.

1.625 is 81.25% of 2

100%-81.25%=18.75%

The JSPEED STSP reduces the throw by 18.75%

JBARONE

1.25 to go in to 3rd gear.

1.25 is 62.5% of 2

100%-62.5%=37.5%

The JBARONE STSP reduces the throw by 37.5%

Nicely done. The only criticism I have (that I'm sure others will be using as ammunition) is that you did not take pictures of the measuring tape next to the shifter to prove that your measurements are accurate.

With that said, it is nice to see real numbers.

Great job.

I used a machinists rule and it was impossible to photograph. That's the reason I stated that anyone can reproduce this information.

One thing I didn't see mention was whether or not either one cause the cables to cross or rub. I remember reading that one of them did and one of them didn't

GhostMercury,
In the 2 installed pics of each I focused more on the cable area then the plates themselves. The JBARONE boot does rub some, The JSPEED does not. Neither of them cross cables.

Thanks,
Jamie

Thanks for the info, but would rather have it come from a 3rd Party..

I see your point but all James did was present facts and measurements, no biased opinion. The only thing left to do is to take his method, apply it and prove that his measurements are right or wrong.

The rest is left up to your own interpretation.

OK, fair enough.

The first member and owner of an 07-09 MS3 to PM me with over 500 posts, posts that demonstrate the technical ability to perform the installation and take the measurements get both kits shipped to them on me.

Fair?

Thanks,
Jamie

OK...Stop the PM's. I'm reading posts and the winning candidate will be announced shortly.

Thanks,
Jamie

I'd like to thank everyone showing willingness to assist with validating the information I posted above.

Mid_Life_Crisis will be the one to get the kits and post the information. I will ship both to him first thing tomorrow morning. He should receive the kits Friday or Saturday and will have the results soon after.

Thanks,
Jamie

In case anyone wonders as to the choice, a couple of points.
1) I was a mechanic for many years, so I have the skillset.
2) I already have performed the Rotus mod and in all likelihood will restore it afterwards, so I don't need either kit, therefore no bias on my part.

I will post clear pics of each measurement so any who wish to do their own math can do so. There will be no interpretations or driving impressions, just facts.
