to get the most bang for the buck, would u recommend aftermarket shifter base bushings or rather the full short shifter kit? here's the pricing and items I see on protegegarage:

E4P Short Shifter - Mazdaspeed3 - $164.95

TWM Short Shifter - Mazdaspeed3 - $249.95

RKM Shifter Base Bushings - Mazdaspeed3 - $20.00

I actually think the stock shifter isn't bad at all.... sometimes it feels like it could be more precise, but overall I find it is pretty smooth and very rarely have difficulty finding the correct gear. do either the bushings or the short shifter really make a noticeable improvement over stock?

thx

Save yourself some time, money, and aggravation.
Bushings and a short shift plate are all you need. ...maybe a rear motor mount.

+1. I have right now only the short shift plate and its made pretty much a drastic imporvement in the shifting precision and feel. Maintains hieght of stock shifter which is great. I can't speak about the bushings though, but Ive heard very good things about them.

I removed the shifter weight for a few days and then put it back on, didn't like it off. Get the bushings first, you can always get the short shifter or shifter plate later if this is not enough.

I just have bushings right now and I love the notchy feel of it. I don't mind the feel or height of the stock shifter a bit, but I still miss shifts way too often. Once I've found speakers that make me happy, a rear MM will be my next mechanical mod.

Agree wholeheartedly with the others. I have the E4P Short Shifter which came with the shifter bushings $149.00 from PG. I also installed the JBarone shifter weight. Those three products make shifting extremely precise and very notchy. Plus I love the 2.5" drop in shifter height!

Our MazdaSpeed 3 short shifter is currently on sale for it's best price ever, $179.95! The original and most trusted short shifter on the market (thumb)

this seems like a really good deal. Does this require you to buy a new shifter boot so that it doesnt get bunched up?

It WAS a good deal. I think it's now $164.00 and should still include the bushings. Check PG's website for details. It's a snap to install as well.

My opinion on this is if you're going to tear into the shifter at all, do everything. The bushings are inexpensive enough to pick up and do at the same time, and do improve the feel of the shifter.

it doesn't neccessarily NEED to be replaced. It just bunches up alot with the short shifter. Most ppl get it for the look basically. A shorter boot looks alot cleaner than one that looks like its been crammed in a hole

hey! i like my crammed shift boot man! its not so bad, i like it the way it looks actually. and for $150 with bushings is a dialed deal. mated with a mode shifter weight shift throws feel PERFECT.
