My 2010 MS3 test drive impressions...

Mazdaspeed 3
I just test drove the new 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 and here are my initial 10 minute test drive impressions.

My test drive took me through some straights, a few curves, the freeway, and a couple of uneven pavement.

Right from the start I already loved the way the clutch felt, it has just about the right amount of feedback to the left leg that I felt my shifts were smoother. It wasn't too hard like the current model, and not too soft. This made my clutch engagement so much better and enjoyable.

Ok, I'm out of the parking lot and onto the streets. The way this engine revs feels different, it seems to want to linger in the 2500-3000 range ready to boost at any given moment. The engine seems to have more sense of urgency and responded to my gas pedal modulation much better than the outgoing model. As with the clutch pedal, the throttle also has the right amount of feedback to my right foot, that I feel much more in control of the car’s acceleration.

So now, I’m at a red light about to turn green. Green goes on, and I quickly accelerate rowing through gears 1, 2, and 3. Not aggressively, but quick and smoothy. All these little things, the clutch feel, the throttle, and the smooth gear transition, come together to make this car more fun to drive. Per the Insideline.com review, Mazda came up with “some kind of built-in throttle manipulation intended to protect the drivetrain from shift shock or to smooth the gearchanges.” Though, this new technique has slowed the car from 0-60 for the price of 0.3 secs, again this is coming from the recent insideline.com full test and review. With that in mind, I personally wouldn’t mind having these smoother shifts for the price of 0.3 secs.

Ok, so the engine and drivetrain feels improved, how about the suspension? Luckily I was able to take the car through some uneven pavements with cracks and dips, both straight and curved roads. And I have to say this has got to be the biggest improvement yet, and if I had the extra cash to trade my old Speed 3 and buy the 2010 model, this would be the selling point of the car! The car felt much more planted to the ground, specially when accelerating through the curves. The ride quality is less raw, but it still gives the driver the confidence to take on the curves.

And then there’s the freeway, getting on the onramp and passing still felt about the same, but just that overall improved feeling of the throttle feedback just felt good. This pocket rocket still holds true to the first generation, it still has the same power even though I didn’t get to red line it (supposedly the new model doesn’t run out of breath as much as the new one).

Overall, I would give the Mazda engineers two thumbs up for the improved throttle response and suspension/chassis setup. Now, if I could just get over that silly smile it has in the front and those ugly tail lights, then maybe…just maybe, I’ll fork the extra cash to trade the old for the new. Oh, and what's up with the interior design they chose? It feels outdated, specially with the red-dots accent and red stripes on the seats??

Thanks for the review. How did the revised gear stacks feel?

Better. I really like the video from Insideline. The fact that the engineering talent was not focused on the power, but the overall feel of the car. The Mazda engineers really made this car more sporty by working on the suspension and drivability of it, which is of course a good thing because this car already has plenty of power for a FWD.

The other school of thought was an AWD setup, but that would have been costly, money wise and weight wise. The AWD wouldn't have been necessary (unless it snows where you live) because the car feels more agile and planted. I'm glad they stuck with FWD (well maybe RWD would have been nice). I mean c'mon, Insideline was able to get 0.92 g's and ~74 mph through the slalom?? Those are pretty damn impressive numbers.

I totally get what you mean about the interior! How cheap does does that red dot pattern look!?!? I mean, if this is supposed to be the higher-end model, then I would have stuck with the alcantara seats, which are awesome, and maybe brushed aluminum or piano black trim

The seats and door trim pattern is my least favorite thing about the car. It used to be the grille, but I'm over that since the Black Mica hides it to the point that I don't really see the smile anymore when I look at the front end. Once I have the cash, I'd love to have the seats and door panels recovered, possibly in the alcantara that the '08.5-09s had (I'd love all leather, but I don't really want to be sliding all over the interior in the twisties :) ). The dash trim with the same pattern doesn't look quite as hokey, but I've thought about possbily replacing it with piano black and adding a red Mazdaspeed logo.

I agree with the OP's review. This car really is better in so many ways, and I look forward to driving it every day. I used to have a 1991 Miata, and it was the best handling car I've ever had (and I really do miss RWD). I honestly did not expect the MS3 to rival the Miata in handling, and in many ways surpasses it. The MS3 feels more planted and has less body roll, and I have not been able to break traction in a turn yet...can't get fast enough!

Hey Vater, nice avatar, did you copy me? lol jk. Man I wish I had the money to trade in my 08 for the 10. I was actually on the fence recently about trading for a Civic Si, just because of the way I feel in the car. My seat position and just the way it feels very agile. However, once I test drove the 10, all those thoughts of getting a Civic Si went away.

To be honest I would have been fine with the power that the Si has, I'm more about refinement now. But now the 10 is more refined, AND the power to go with it. I think Mazda has another winner on their hands. I can't wait for the comparos to start coming out.

Y'know, when I first got this car the overall feel while driving it kinda reminded me of my buddy's '03 Civic SI, which is a good thing. But I much prefer the power and handling of the '10 Speed3 (obviously). I've always preferred Mazda's designs to just about any Honda, anyway, but I wasn't really sold on the 2010s at first. In fact I loathed what they did with the 3 in general. Now I love it. Well, the Speed, at least. In black. :)

It really does grow on you. I was in the same boat. When I first saw the 2010's on the lot, I couldn't figure out why they ruined the car. Now, I can't imagine not having one. The more I look at it and drive it, the more I like it. I have a feeling people will come around as 2010's become a more common sight.

You didnt have a first gen speed3? Also, you would compare the handling to the miata? WOW!
