Can any shops on here build a twin scroll exhaust manifold?

To tell you the truth, I think after looking at their twinscroll header I probably wouldn't go after it. It didn't look like the piping layout was well thought-out. Hell, one cylinder's piping was two times longer than all of the others'.

agreed, the design isnt an equal length, thats one of the main things that made twin scroll so torquey, especially on my subaru

im thinking maybe a ram horn style manifold or a short runner setup like on an evo

for ex.

That just created a commotion in my pants.
Do want!

It looks like the community is going to have to push this with a manufacturer. Honestly, I think Corksport would be ideal considering they are Mazda only and have experience with exhaust on the MS6 and MS3. I've talked to a couple of people there, Derrick and Chris. Would you like to bring up the idea to them or should I?

im just thinking out loud here... but what if you took a manifold like the one above, cut the flange off that bolts to the head and welded on a mazdaspeed 6 flange... then used an evo 8 or 9 turbo which are readily available... if i recal correctly... when the turbo hangs down, it should point the correct direction (intake side going towards driver side)...

is this a possibility?

the stock evo 9 turbo is good to 400whp btw

blender, it sounds like you are familiar and know these guys a bit better. Shoot the idea to em and see what they say...

I dropped Derrick an email. Hopefully we can get him on here and discuss it a bit with us in the next week or so.

Derrick forwarded my email to Jason Griffith, Corksport's Product Development Engineer. I am continually impressed with their operation as I got a thorough and positive response within hours. See below for Jason from Corksport's response to the twin scroll question:

Hey Derrick,

I've done some business with you guys and really love your products. I'm a very active member on the Mazda247.com forums where we were discussing a Twinscroll exhaust manifold for the 2.3 MZR DISI Turbo application (MS3 and MS6). No one but OBX makes one that we can find. And nobody wants to use OBX! I mentioned on the forum that I would talk to you guys and see if there was interest on the part of Corksport to go that route. I know there are a lot of guys who are interested in it.

Please let me know your thoughts on this. You've got customers anxiously waiting!

Thank you,
Lawrence Alexander (Blendercloud on Mazda247.com)

This is something we have been discussing recently as well. We'd really like to get into manifold design and fabrication for turbocharged applications. The twin scroll would be a great upgrade for the MZR and I'll try to find out what the cost per part would be - I'm guessing the cost will be greater by double or more than the OBX units - I found one on eBay for $250 and that's . Timeframe for something like this would not be overnight either and we would want to be able to design it in context of our new 2010 MS3 as well. My goal out of this product would be to put the highest quality tubular exhaust manifold out for the MZR with argon backpurged welds, flycut or blanchard ground flanges and multiple configurable options: turbo flanges, external wastegate options, etc. Is there a specific turbo that the group was hoping to use or are there a few that we should be planning for?

I guess the bottom line is - we're evaluating this as a product option, but there will most likely be a group buy necessity to make it happen. The prices will be commensurate with the performance and quality that we will be delivering in this product line (tubular stainless manifolds are something that anyone with welding skills can hack together but to do it in a quality manner with repeatable results and happy customers is costly).

Feel free to give me a call and chat in the near future,

I am assuming that he means the final cost will be $500 or more for the manifold. Prototypes and one-of-a-kind makes will likely be quite a bit more expensive. However, it sounds like they are open to group buys when they do develop the product. Even at that price, I think he is in-line with many of the other regular (non-twinscroll) manifolds on the market for the MZR engine. It definitely looks like they are researching the market for it. I will be giving him a call early next week to talk more about it. I'll post my findings in this thread.

Excellent work!!!

This is great! Maybe they could offer this as a kit, with an internal or external wastegate... (id prefer external). Would you like to me send them an email/call them and show more interest?

You're more than welcome to send them an email and express interest. I don't really want to be overbearing asking them for products and then have their attitude go the way Cobb''s did though.

If you are going to put this much work into a manifold, I would talk to Carlos at Creative Performance. He already has the highest flowing top mount manifold on the market and he has already indicated that he could make a twin scroll manifold.

his website is cpboost.com right?

I spoke to Jason from Corksport for about 45 minutes today on the phone. I can tell he's chomping at the bit to build these, but Corksport as a whole wants to make sure it's done right. He made mention of the ability to do a handful of them for us if it doesn't work into their standard product line, but that it could be quite expensive. He is going to call me back next week and give me some numbers. I'll pass those numbers on to you guys when I get them and we can go from there.
