Another Wheel Bearing Question, Rear this time...

Ok, did the front wheel bearings a few months ago, roaring is still there, except no longer in the front, in the back...

Vato-Zone says there are two different rear "hub" and bearing assembly's for a 2002 Mazda Protege. One for "anti-lock brakes" and one for "drum brakes."

Well, technically, I have neither, or I'm under that impression...

2002 P5 with rear disc's, but not anti-locks.

Which do I need? The picture (which may or may not be of actual part) shows some splines at the end of the hub for the anti-lock, and no such spines on the drum...

$99 each for anti-lock, $40 each for drum.

PS: I had the car aligned after the front bearings were done, will she need to be aligned again? Not messing with the front at all this time...
 
I've actually been wondering this same thing. Do proteges have ABS?

I notice when I press on the brakes hard while traveling at around 60 mph I feel a pulsing in the brake pedal. Is this normal? My dad said thats my ABS at work...? (bike)

If you have ABS it will show on the gauge cluster when you swith on the ignition.

I ended up buying one off of ebay (e-mailed to ask if they have two) for $32 shipped. States to fit Protege with rear disc, without ABS...

Should be the one I need, but I need two.

Thoughts on having to re-align the car anyone?

More cash I hadn't planned on spending, then again, when the car was only slightly quieter after replacing the front bearings and putting on new tires, I should have known something was still messed up...

Plus, if no alignment is needed, I'll replace one side and see if the roaring disappears...

Some have ABS from my knowledge. I know mine used to, the lights there to remind me.

Anyways, it depends. It should only pulsate from abs at the point the tires actually slide, or lock up. Should be around 18% if I remember correctly...it's been a while since I did my ABS class. If they aren't locking up and it's pulsing, it's probably warped rotors.

uh oh...

Well when i turn the key (not turn the car on, but turn the electric on), the abs light shows. Does that mean I have abs?

And I think my rotors may be warped, as when I have the car raised and spin the tires it drags at different places on the tire...
How do i check for warped rotors? Is it possible to get them resurfaced, or do i need to get new rotors?

Yes, that means you have abs.
As far as checking for that you need a special tool(kind of) to measure them.
As far as resurfacing or not it depends on how thick they are, another thing you'd have to measure or have someone measure for you.
 
Most shops that resurface rotors will measure them before agreeing to resurface them. If too thin to resurface a good shop will refuse the work.

Ok, back to my wheel bearing problem...

Any links to a step-by-step guide of any sort?

I'm sure I can just tear into it and figure it out myself, but I like to try to be over-prepared...

Hoping to start on this tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Nope, but it is super easy.

Remove wheel, disc and caliper. Remove axle nut with a 35mm socket (after knocking out the section that locks it into place). Slide off the Hub/Bearing. Grease the axle lightly. Slide on the new Hub/bearing. Reinstall in reverse of order.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions. I had issues and needed both an axle pusher and a modified pulley puller because the inner race stayed on the axle and I had to pop it off. All in all, not bad. The best source for a rear bearing/hub is ebay. Make sure you get the right number of studs and for ABS if you have it.

btw what grease should I use? I have a tube of Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease, can that be used?
 
And you can buy a rear wheel bearing with the ABS ring even if your car doesn't have ABS - the ring just won't get used.

The big different is that the rear bearing/hub assemblies for disc brakes have 5 lug studs, while the drum assembly only has 4 lug studs.

OMG are you serious? I just spent 2 days looking for the "right" hub bearing, I was looking at all the different sites that sell the bearing, and every site had different info saying it would fit, and others saying it wouldnt.
I ended up ordering it at my local auto parts so I can return it if it was the wrong bearing....I also ended up paying $50 more compared to online stores :(

Yes, the ABS "toothed" ring is supposed to be used in conjunction with the ABS sensor that is mounted on that corner of the car, but it won't hurt anything to have the toothed ring on your bearing if you don't have the ABS sensors.

If you have rear discs, just make sure to get the bearing/hub assembly with 5 lug studs, and you're good to go.
