Tire Wear

My MS3 has 50k on it and i'm about to go through my second set of tires. The stock potenzas lasted 24,500. I bought a second set of Pirellis PZero Nero which are on their way out at 25,500 with horrific inside tread wear which is most likely the neg camber is this the nature of the beast? The stock Potenzas have a UTQG of 140. The Pirellis have UTQG of 400 and they've worn out just as bad as the Potenzas. My driving style has remained the same.

So what gives. Pirellis aren't as good a tire? Or am I lying to my self about my driving style? I may lie to other people but I most certainly don't lie to my self. So I've been looking at the Potenza RE760 Sport. (pics below two worn Pirellis and the Potenza RE760s)

The PZero Nero is a quite decent all-season tire that by all rights should outlast the RE050A by far (it's not to be confused with the PZero which is a bad ass summer tire also with poor wear).

Are those front or rear tires in the pics? Do you have lowering springs? Was your car properly aligned? Did you ever rotate those bad boys?

I have 12k on my poortenzas and they have to go. My next purchase are tires. Can't wait to do away with these bad as tires

Man, I'm at 16k miles and still have half of the tread left on the RE050A's. And I drive the s*** out of the car. I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones. But I know that the tread wears a lot faster from now on, so I may not get much more than 20-25k miles.

Me, I'm leaning toward the new Bridgstone RE11's. They are soft sticky summer only tires, but we have soft sticky weather here most of the time. lol. I need all the warm weather traction I can find, tread wear be damned.

It's not you. I got down to 2/32's on my Pzero Neros when they had about 16,000 miles on them. I think the 400 wear is more like 200. Not sure how they tested it. I went to Eagle GTs whihc supposedly have a 45,000 mile life. I believe their wear is about 450 to 500.

BTW I like the GT's nice compromise between grip and comfort. I'm not out for balls to the wall performance. The MS3 is my daily driver and the GT's are a good compromise thus far.

Okay I got quite a bit to say so just bare with me here...UTQG ratings ONLY apply to tires made by the same manufacturer. For example, a Bridgestone P99* has a UTQG rating of 400, so it will have roughly double the tread life than say a Bridgestone B33*. But you can't compare UTQG ratings from one manufacturer to another manufacturer. For example, a Goodyear BK66* has a UTQG rating of 200 but it has just as long of a tread life as the Bridgestone P99* from the comparison earlier. Hope that helped one of your questions. Now, assuming that your wheel alignment is within spec, it is normal for your tires to wear the way they do. This car is made from the factory to have almost a whole degree of front wheel negative camber with a tolerance of plus or minus 1 degree. The rear also has enough negative camber to cause the tire wear you're seeing. This is the price everyone has to pay to own a car such as ours...

Here's the specs for the 3 basic alignment angles for the car:

Front *Unloaded*
Toe: 0 degree 11 minutes plus/minus 22 minutes
Camber: -0 degree 57 minutes plus/minus 1 degree
Caster: 3 degrees 8 minutes plus/minus 1 degree

Rear *Unloaded*
Toe: 0 degree 11 minutes plus/minus 22 minutes
Camber: -1 degree 42 minutes plus/minus 1 degree
Caster: Rear caster is not measurable so there is technically no caster

These are from the rear but my fronts are just as bad.My car is aligned properly it's been checked every time i had the tires rotated every 5k. No it does not have lowering springs.

my friends have them and rip the s*** out of them. they last long are good in wet and dry weather arent noisey and THEY LAST

i rotate my tires with my oil change. every 5k miles

damn stock tire only lasted 18k with my lead foot. they were too soft. i really like the Goodyear GT Eagles, tho I am told they are being discontinued.

Every 5000 miles for me. I have 12K and change on my OEM tires and they still have plenty left. I don't drive particularly hard though.

I agree! Thank you! To me the forming of the UTQG was something done to appeal to the masses but never really utilized properly. The whole thing is quite a paradox

just got my car inspected a couple of weeks ago and my tires are pretty much shot already. i got the MS3 a year ago, put 8k miles on and the potenzas are down to 2/32.

i really dont drive the car all that hard, especially compared to everyone else on the boards. rotated them at like 2k miles and was about to do it again before i found out they were dead anyway. any ideas on why mine would be trashed so quick? i sure as hell dont want to be throwing down like $600 on new tires every year.

I'm at 27k miles and I'm on my third set with the first two sets being OEM potenzas.

Now I'm running Pzero Nero all-season.

My stock rubber only lasted 9100 miles...and the tires were rotated at each oil change. I was surprised to only get that many miles out of them, but I guess all those trips to the Dragon (14 runs on my last visit) could have something to do with it.
