[Here's the monthly sales report I've been doing, it just adds the historical monthly sales from 2007 to 2009]

North America Mazda released their April 2009 US sales data.

It wasn't a great month. In April 2009 1,758 Mazda5s were sold, down 12.6% from March 2008.

For comparision 7,303 Mazda3s were sold in April. Mazda sales overall were down 32.1%.

Here's the data I have gathered from 2007 to the present.

But Mazda also cut back on their factory incentives on the Mazda5, surely that affects sales.

February and March incentives = $1,000 cash back plus 0% financing for 36 months

April and May incentives = $500 cash back plus 0.9% financing for 36 months

...Mazda sales overall were down 32.1%...
For the sake of comparison:
General Motors: down 33.2%
Chrysler: down 48%
Ford: down 31.6%
Toyota: down 41.9%
Honda: down 25%

Eh, not bad for a down economy.

I wonder what Canadian sales figures are, I would bet it's just as much if not more. The 5 is the second best selling Mazda in Canada, behind the 3 which has been in the top 3 Canadian sales ranking for the past 5 years, and actually was #1 in one year beating both Civic and Corolla.

That's still pretty good, given the whole downturn (and Mazda and others being down 30% or more). If it slips below 1500 a month (in a high selling season like Spring / Summer), that's more troubling.

It was inevitable that sales would taper with the lower incentives.

And continues to outsell the CX-7, thaaat is interesting...

Here's the data I have gathered from 2007 to the present.

Thanks for posting this each month; I look forward to the information. I sure wish the sales would pick up as I don't want Mazda to quit selling the car here in the USA.

Thanks.

I wouldn't worry. Look at it this way, the Mazda5 is the third most popular car in their line up.

Mazda can't be too happy about these sales figures.

True the Mazda5 is still holding up but THAT is about it.
The Mazda6 has tanked... and it's a newly redesigned model...

Isn't it just the general shift away from midsize to compact cars? If you compare US sales from a year ago, it's gone from trucks and midsize cars dominating the Top 10 to a lot more compacts this year.

Top car sales, 2007.

I think part of that is Mazda using Chase credit now for new auto loans. I believe Mazda Credit (Ford Credit) is no longer available to new Mazda buyers.

The $1000/36 mo 0% was through Mazda (chase) credit.
Ford credit was dropped last year after Ford sold its majority interest in Mazda.

Well I guess I contributed to the 505 Tribute sales by purchasing one on 30 April 2009!

The Mazda5 I bought in February was through Chase.

And besides the $1,000 cash back and 0% financing for three years, there was also 90 days no payments and no money down.

Mazda made a "big" mistake with not bringing over the much better looking and better sized European 6.

I have no idea why they got rid of the 6 wagon... I see lots around here and it's just a shame that they got rid of it. Same as the Focus wagon too. It seems that just because it didn't do well in the US, Canada has to lose it too.

We've had some great cars come to Canada that the US never got though, the Toyota Echo hatchback, Nissan X-Trail, Acura CSX (formerly the 1.6EL/1.7EL/EL), the Smart forTwo before it became available in the US, all of these cars were hot sellers in Canada but wouldn't have had a chance in the US (we'll have to see how the fortwo does in the US).

I hope we don't lose the 5 either...

What makes you think we will lose the 5? (even as a remote possibility) Even though the sales are modest they are holding up quite well in this environment and it has sold way beyond what Mazda expected.
It also stands virtually untouched in terms of any direct competition. Why in the world would Mazda want to pull the 5 out of the US market?

The only scenarios I can think of is if they replaced it... (since they have nothing in the pipeline... this is remote) or if Mazda decided to completely pull out of the US market.

Just saying. I didn't see too many 5s in the US when i was there for a weekend where on a typical commute I'll see anywhere between 5 to 10 in each daily 3 hour commute.
