What Oil To Use?

Yes- that's what I figured I'd rather waste some money and be safe. The car did not have a lot of service records. However, I bought it from a very reputable mercedes dealer, so my guess is that they changed it. It came with a manual but I wanted an opinion from another owner. Is the PP 5W-30 synthetic?

HAHAHAHA. I wouldn't put the words "reputable" and "dealer" in the same sentence, regardless of what brand.

I got my first oil change at my mazda dealership and I saw that they put regular 5w-30 oil in. I asked about using synthetic oil and they recommended against it. I forget exactly what the explanation was, but it had something to with oil leaking?

Like the above post says, the manual also recommends regular oil. So I'm thinking to not spend the extra money and just good quality regular oil.

Don't be a fool. Mazda dealers don't like it because it cant be used in the rotary engine, and for a while Mazda avoided synthetic all together. They are now ok with it on all of their models except the RX-8. I have asked a handful of dealers and gotten some retarded answers. They start going off on some claim about this or that. Improper heat transfer, smoking turbos, voided warranty ...etc etc. Like any of these idiots know the first thing about heat transfer. I have gotten multiple contradicting answers from the same dealer on different calls. They ramble on like a bunch of pot smoking teenagers telling misinformed stories about police oppression.

"Uhhh I heard there was this one kid who uhh used synthetic oil and his turbo exploded. Its because the synthetic oil is too slippery and it makes the blades turn too fast until they explode soo...."

yeah.... whatever.

Take some college level physics and chemistry courses and the answer will be clear. As long as it meets the specs in the manual, its fine.

Vey true about the dealers lol..and yes I have no ******* clue what I was thinking when I said Jiffy Lube. Just made an appointment at the local Mazda dealer, and Im going to give them the PP to use in my car. Thanks guys. The answers were all very helpful

Make sure you watch them use it. If you're not standing right there, they may well "stash" your oil and use their regular stuff. Make sure they know it's 5 1/2 to 6 quarts.

And when you get home, check the the undertray to see if your missing any screws or if they jacked up anything down there. My undertray was fine after an oil change at the dealership, but one of the screw clips was stripped. Not to mention they used 10W-30 and didn't fill it up enough. They said they would drain it and fill it up with 5W-30, but it was too much trouble for me to set aside time to do that and drive there. That was the first and last I brought it in for an oil change. Now I've got the spin-on conversion with a Fumoto valve for quick and easy changes at home :)

I wouldn't trust a dealership to know its asshole from its elbow.

Yowza! and i thought I was distrustful of stealerships...some wildly latent pent-up frustration here, eh? (protest) (bang) (enguard) (argh) (gun)

Dealerships suck but I do like them to change my oil now and then. I make them use my own supplys so they charge me $15 for the labor. Dealerships get pissed and dont like people who buy a car and then they never see you for service and 2 years later you are coming in with a smoking turbo and mods. I stay freindly with them enough that they know my face by site and are not going to mess with me becuase I have a CAI and BPV or MM. PP 5w-30 all the way.

Yeah that's what I was thinking- I want to watch them change it- or else yeah, they might actually take mine and use some cheap stuff

Yeah dealers do suck... they always try to tell me things about cars that I know or that's wrong and then I argue with them and they try to act like they know everything. One time at audi dealer with my brother asked if they had any RS4's and the guy said "no" "they don't bring those to America" and then my brother goes "why is there one right over there then"? Needless to say, it was pretty damn funny to see the guys reaction.

i read that 40 weight is good for turbocharged engines and is better on hot/cold temps.

yeah just wondering..im just going to stick with the 30 beacause Mazda reccomends it...but yeah my older brother has a BI-turbo S4 and he use 0-40

I use Penz Plat - you can pick up 6 quarts at Wal-Mart for about $32.00.

QFT

I didn't real the whole thread. But I say Penz Plat. and had ot agree. Been running it in my car since almost day one. Wallyworld has it for $20 for 5 quarts right now!

I just picked up 7 qts. at a local Kragen for like $30(and yes I know it doesnt take 7 qts.)

FWIW: no oil lighter than 40w will ever enter my florida car. not saying i have all the answers, i just plan on keeping this car for as long as i possibly can, and believe heavier oil = happier turbo/bearings. might lose 1 mpg but so what? i'll take engine longevity over marginal mpg improvement any old day.
