we have two options the way i see it. i'm going to let you all decide. i need to be there friday night so i can get setup and situated for the meet. i plan on meeting up with Storm that night so i'd like to be in NY at a decent hour. we can do this one of two ways. we can leave thursday night and split the journey, do 7 hours to akron and crash there, finish the trip friday. option two is we leave at 4am on friday and drive the whole way. accounting for the fact we lose an hour heading east, we'd have to leave that early if we were to expect to bypass chicago traffic and indiana toll road traffic.
a third option is for me to leave ahead of everyone else and leave your departure times respective to you, up to you.

All things considered, I wouldn't mind leaving at 4am on Friday... I'm just considering how I'm not going to want to drive to Akron after a full day of work and school only to arrive at a hotel and sleep for 15 minutes before leaving again.
My vote's for the 4am Friday and drive straight through. But I'll do whatever.
ken, if you are leaving thursday night i would like to come along with you. i've done the whole drive 10+ hours on no sleep and be active all day thing and it's not something i like to repeat if i have to.
as far as the whole bed thing, be fair. if you sleep in a bed friday night be gracious and offer it to someone else who didn't sleep in a bed for saturday night.

It's only 13 hours? I do 10 from Providence, RI to Cleveland, OH no problem. I'll have to stop in Chicago some time for an extra 3 hours! Hope to see you all at OCC!
We save 2 hours of drive time if we leave from Akron. If we leave thrusday night we will be at the rest stop by 1 in the morning. Which is normal sleep time for most of us anyway. If we leave at 8 the next morning that will but us in NY by 3 in the afternoon. 7 hours of sleep sounds fine to me.
if we stop in dayton for the night we have a 10 hour drive in the morning. idk. i'll call ken tonight.

the drive time will be the same no matter where we stop. and if everyone is so concerned about only getting 2 rooms to save money, why would we drop MORE money on another hotel room?

Here's the by-the-numbers breakdown...
Leaving Thursday night at 7pm:
From Grayslake to Akron is 412mi, google map calls it 6 hours 48 minutes. Say that speeding and pee breaks cancel each other out... and factor in that you're loosing an hour crossing into the eastern time zone... if you leave Grayslake at 7pm central time, you end up in Akron at 3am eastern time.
Either way you cut it, Akron to Newburgh is another 7 hours and about 450 miles. So say we leave the hotel in Akron at 8am eastern time, you end up in Newburgh at 3pm with five hours of sleep.
Leaving Friday morning at 4am:
Were we to leave from Grayslake (or the Oasis... I'm just using Grayslake for reference) on Friday morning, we face 14 hours straight from 4am central.. meaning we end up in Newburgh at about 7pm eastern.
While this is a later arrival time, we are potentially better rested from the onset, and don't have to worry about where to stay for one night.
The more I think about it, I don't think that I can physically make the drive leaving Thursday night. I'd be getting up Thursday morning at 5, going to work, then going to school and taking a calc exam until about 10... no break... and leaving straight from there to drive until 5am... Then only sleep about 3 hours before driving 7 more hours...
So if we want to leave in two groups, I'll spearhead the 4am departure.
