funny noise when started

i've been getting a loud noise from when starting the cx-7.. sounds like a loud clacking but only lasts like 1 maybe 2 seconds and stops and won't do it again til' it has cooled down for atleast 30 minutes..don't know what it is.. hasn't affected performance or mpg's so not to worried but has gotten a little annoying

I think i get this on my Speed3. Its a quick "tap-tap-tap-tap" and goes away and only does it on cold start ups.

its your vvt actuator, take it to the dealership, its being recalled

Didn't see this thread before I posted mine. Our car is at the dealership for the same problem. They told us it was a sludge build-up under the VVT cam.

I have taken it to the Mazda dealership for every oil change. Think I'm going to start doing it myself and only use Mobil 1 full synthetic oil from now on.

I switched to Mobil1 and it still occurred after the first change to synthetic. Just changed again and I can't remember if I've heard it or not. You think Synthetic will eliminate that?

its not your oil, its a defective part mainly on 2007 cx7s, take it to dealership.

No. However, after we get the car back I'm wondering if Mobil 1 will help keep the problem from happening again.

so not a defective parts in the MS3's? Because I have this tapping/knock noise at start up during cold weather

I don't get why mine or yours would squeal, I mean mine's only 8 months old. I would expect it from something at least 7 years old.

I had something like that..Mazda engineer happened to be there and they ended up changing the belt tensioner and it went away.

That could be it, I'm just not going to look into it. I've got a date with the District Manager for the car and I'm just making an extra list of stuff I never brought up to bring up with him...along with about 20 service records in 8 months. I appreciate the help and if the car doesn't get everything fixed then I'll look into it. Thanks for the heads up though! I'm keeping that one in mind just in case.

No squealing on mine. It sounds very similar to a Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel engine in a John Deere tractor for about a second after startup. After that, it purrs like a kitten and still runs as if it were brand new.

We had the TSB work done last winter when the wife's CX7 started the "rattling" noise on startup.
