Just installed Cobb SRI -- question about the noise

damn this thread is just full of louisiana peeps. i might as well join. and umm thats a sexy sound which is quite normal.

Sup Ryno we should have a dinner meet in Baton Rouge some night. Abilor wants to see some modded MS3's.

Same here

When I step on the gas, there's a "SSSSHHH" sound (almost like the opposite of sucking in air) but when I'm around 3500 rpm and up, that's when there's the sucking in air sound. I followed the COBB instructions and everything fits well (I double checked). Just wondering if the early/temporary "SSSSHHH" sound is normal, or if anyone else is experiencing it. Improved throttle response is definitely there. Thanks.

Yeah, I do find it rather annoying - had I known it would be so loud, I'd probably have gone with a CAI. At first I was wondering if I had a leaky BPV, because the sound is exactly the same as when I let off the throttle. But pretty much any load on the engine, even at constant speed, can result in that hissing sound. With windows up and radio playing at a normal volume, it is louder than the radio.

I totally agree with everything you've said...but I've learned to live with it.

What is wrong with you two. Why are you driving a turbocharged car then? They all make that sound.

It's my first turbocharged car. My first intake. I didn't know there'd be a constant, soft whiny sound (almost like a leak, as it's not the most pleasant sound) even at slow speeds and very slight throttle. Like I said, I've learned to live with it. I knew I'd get the PSSSH sound, just not the really high pitched whiny sound. In the end, I still love the intake. Putting the SU test pipe on tomorrow!

with stock bpv, i was getting the "hamster sneezin" sound even at very light throttle let off....now i have the rkm and on light throttle i don't hear it anymore....but WOT, it's nice and loud.

Its the sound of the SRI sucking hot air after flowing through the radiator and AC condenser. You should have got a MS3 CAI...

You should have got a pvc pipe from Home Depot and run it like a snorkel instead with no filter, that way you get nice cool air (not the hot air from the engine, radiator, AC condenser or the hot sun baked road with water, you can hydro lock, you know) and no restriction of a filter... who need filter anyway and you get ram air too = more powa

When the speed gets rolling...intake temps are about 1-3* warmer than ambient. Thats what my dashhawk says. SRI FTW.

Sounds like some people need some stereo mods. ;) I can't hear jack s*** over mine, including the SRI, tires squealing, road noise, or the exhaust. The only way I know the tires have lost traction is when I feel myself going sideways or see the TCS light blinking at me. So yeah, replace the HU, Blose sucks more than the SRI!

CAI is much louder than the cobb. Going to a Cobb after an Injen was like going back to stock.

Uhh, no they don't... I heard nothing at all with the stock intake. I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually - it's just louder than I'd like - much louder than the BPV sound. If Cobb comes out with their 'cold air box', I'll be first in line to get one - primarily because it should muffle the sound quite a bit.

It's much quieter than the intake I used to have on a honda with a supercharger and cold air intake. That damned thing sounded like a wet dry vac hissing constantly, even at idle it was annoying as hell.

All this talk about the noises the SRI makes is getting me worried. I actually kinda like the muted stock intake and hearing mostly engine noise when I romp on it. If all I hear is pssssshhhh and PSSSSSSHHHHH all day long, I might go nuts. And by all accounts, adding the Cobb inlet is probably going to make this even worse.

Maybe I should just sell my Cobb SRI & inlet...

well thats because it was like trying to suck a mcdonalds triple thick milkshake though a coffee straw. No movement=no sound. (hand)

You do get used to it and you learn to keep it out of boost so you don't hear it.
