FYI: Carrillo Rods vs. Factory Rods

Just thought I would give you guys a side by side comparison of a Carrillo rod vs. a factory rod. This Carrillo rod is modified by Carrillo to accept factory pistons/pins. I believe they stock these now. But they do not have a stock number yet. Also note, that the Carrillo rods with bolts are lighter than the factory rods without bolts. See pics. Enjoy.

What kind of power would these rods hold? don't think id change the rods without changing the pistons at the same time

Stronger Rods are the least of our worries as far as making big power. There's a whole bunch of s*** that still needs to be figured out.

well volkswagen guys are making way more than 500whp on stock pistons and aftermarket rods......

I updated the first post with side pics. Also, for those who don't know, here is why I'm upgrading my rods. This happened to me in November when my GT28 overspiked to 30psi.

Is that only a bend in the rod and no other damage? How'd you take the shot?

Took the oil pan off along with the balance shaft. This was cylinder #4 (farthest driver side). I'll post more info/pics in about a week.

How did I know I bent the rod? Audible knocking.

shouldn't installation of those rods get you more hp from the weight difference? i mean, it should free up hp that the heavier rods take away cuz of the rotational mass right?

just a thought

Hey Jimmy,

You just dropping the pan and leaving the pistons in the cylinders and replacing the rods?

I ask 'cause I was looking into doing the same thing . . . I mean, if I can keep the stock pistons and rings, I don't have to hone the cylinders and I won't have to get aftermarket pistons, which I hear can be quite noisy and cause the knowck sensor to go nuts, or am I wrong? All the work can be accomplished in a few hours that way (I am quite "handy"). . . plus I wouldn't disturb the head . . .

BTW, how much for the Carillo's?

the piston and Rod have a Wrist pin connecting the two, thats the shiny part you see in his picture that the rod slides on. the pin has to be pressed out(or so i believe) and i don't see any way of you doing it with the piston still in the motor.

I know about the wrist pin, but I didn't know that they had to be pressed out as most that I have dealt with were a slide fit. That is why I was asking if this could be done by just dropping the pan . . .

There is no way to do it from the bottom. The pistons/rods must come out from the top. Which means the head and timing cover must come off. Easy way is to pull the engine. If you are brave, you can try and leave the block in the car. It'll be much harder, but it can be done. Mine has to come out to install my Fidanza flywheel and Spec 3+ clutch, not to mention machine work, etc.

The pins are fully floating. Pop out the clip on the side of the piston and slide the wrist pin out. It's not press fitted.

Pricing, contact Carrillo if you want to pay retail. Or contact JSCSpeed (they might be able to order them). I think another vendor P3 on another board is going to do a GroupBuy on Carrillo rods.

Here are the part numbers for Carrillo rods for factory pistons.

MA-23DISIT<SA-65927H-00 = Super-A WMC bolts <------- Mine
MA-23DISIT>-65927H-00 = H-beam WMC bolts
MA-23DISIT>-65927S-00 = H-beam CARR bolts

If you want them for aftermarket pistons like CP, then just remove the "T" in DISIT to DISI. These are the part numbers for rods for aftermarket pistons.

I stand corrected, i just know when i had to do it for my Talon i had a shop put the piston and rod together. guess lack of knowledge and tools it was a good thing i did.
