Forge BPV install and impressions.

Let me start off with thisof all the bolt on mods Ive ever installed on the cars Ive had in the past, the Forge BPV is by far the best value, bang-for-the-buck mod Ive ever had.

BEST.

Not only is this the easiest install on the planet (10-15min max, a 10mm socket and a pair of pliers), its also the best.

This car lives and dies by its turbothis is no V8 so if you want to go fast, better build (and hold) the boost. I had a suspicion my stock BPV was leaking boost after I installed a SRI and heard a hissing sound while cruising in the higher RPMs in 5th and 6 and when it wasnt holding boost on harder accelerationthis suspicion was confirmed after installing the Forge, popped in blue with 2 shims and no more hiss. ON top of that, on harder acceleration the boost builds quick and stays there. Speaking of building boost, this thing builds up FAR faster than stock, the difference is instant. Of course you get the trademark SsssshING! when you let off the throttle but this is nowhere near the horror stories Ive readyou think this thing is loud? Try the blower scream on a Terminator Cobra or a B&M shifter with no bushings bolted directly to the top of a Tremec T56 transmissionif this and a SRI is bothersome to you, you should buy a minivan. (Funny thing, on my first test drive, I drove past some teens walking aside the road and decided to try it out, the noise actually startled them!)

Needless to say, for an entry fee of $170, this thing should be the first thing you do to this car (followed by some better motor mounts and a different intake)this car needs boost to be fast and this thing lets you use what the car makes, something the pile of s*** stocker does not. Shame on Mazda for skimping on that plastic pile of crap.

Lastly, no need for picstheres 4000 of them floating around so do a search.

next up, TRZ motor mounts

People think I'm crazy, but I've said the same thing! I gained several psi over stock at almost every point in the powerband. Some mods have made a bigger difference on the butt dyno, but always for way more cost...

Forge is a great product and I love mine. Don't give people the impression that it increases performance though. Its cheap , easy, and everyone should get one but it doesn't do anything over the stock one (if its functioning properly). I know a lot of people said their stockers were leaking but mines just fine. I dont hold or build boost any faster than I did with my stock one.

For me it was a performance boost...no, I'm 100% sure I'm not making more boost over stock but I'm building it and holding it FAR better (and my stock BPV has roughly 300 miles on it, I installed a SRI at around 140 miles and noticed the leaking instantly).

I'll put it this way, it's not making anything new, it's better using what you have.

Yep definately I agree. My point was just that not everyone's bpv leaks and upgrading it (while a good thing) wont yield any gains over a properly functioning stock bpv.

I can't personally tell if mine's leaking. I'll hear the turbo spool nice and neatly unless i'm pressing the gas less than WOT, then you'll hear a louder whooshing.

Either way, I hear this is a great mod and will hopefully do this next!

Look at your DH Silver Ecstasy! With the stock my peak boost would be 15 and immediately drop and hold at 12. With the forge I am getting peak boost pressures up near 18.5-19 and am holding no less than 15 (in 3rd, 4th and 5th of course). My stocker was definately leeking!

Sure it is... That is our max boost. you should hit that easily in 4th and 5th if you ever really stretch it out. I have seen higher spikes.

I installed my brand new forge to day as well myself and I must agree, this thing is amazing. It holds boost so strong and it doesn't fall off at all. I went from stock to type s knock off to greddy rs to now a forge, and the forge is the best I've owned yet. The greddy rs was great and sounded good, but where it was adjustable, I know NOTHING of how to setup it up properly to work on this car, so it felt kinda sluggish. I put this forge on today, took the car for a stroll and launched first, slammed 2nd and the car grabbed so hard my headunit popped out of my dash and my sub fell over in the back. my buddy was riding with me and he goes HOLY s***. I couldn't be happier with this forge. I just wished I knew exactly which spring and shim combo to go with. I too did 2 shims and the blue spring. Is the shims what is causing the bpv to make that clang noise?

I too love my forge! I don't know if the stock BPV was leaking because I waited about 3.4 seconds after buying the car before I got my SRI and forge BPV but I deff love it, it does its job great and doesn't cost much.

There isn't really a "right" spring and shim combo. there are too many variables to give a 100% answer... but 95% of the set-ups out there will work best with either the blue or the blue with two shims.

Here is the reply I've given to my last email on the subject:

" The springs are used to account for variances in atmospheric conditions, and the relationship between boost and vacuum that different cars will see. To simplify it greatly the more boost that you are running the stiffer a base spring pressure you will need to compensate for the pressure differential between the manifold and the charge piping right at initial boost onset. Cars with few modifications running at or near factory boost seem to respond best with the yellow or blue springs. Cars running a bit more boost the blue and a few shims. The red spring is best used on cars running upper teens or low twenties.

That out of the way let me quickly go over how to adjust the valve. I recommend using three different spring tensions and performing some real world testing. Say for instance the yellow, blue, and blue with shims. Drive normally for a few miles (part throttle shifting, stop and go, merging and passing for some wide open data) then do a few wide open throttle runs. Do this with all three setups and compare the results, with "seat of the pants" or with data logging. If there is no difference use the softest setup. If the middle seems best that is the setup to use, if the stiffest works best perform the same tests with the next stiffest and compare. "

My turbosmart behaves the same: builds faster and holds longer. Getting everything I can out of her now...

I honestly couldn't tell if mine made a diffrence or not. I got it used for %70 from a member on here so it was a good mod for me either way because I like the sound too.

I think I'll be picking this up soon. It seems like everyone that has this likes it and the "sword clashing" sound is definently different from others.
