Excessive Wheelspin - Almost no traction

When I'm in a jam and I need to get in front of someone, I've noticed that I can't ever get a quick start because I get tons of wheelspin and I end up just sitting there spinning my tires.

This is the first time I've owned a 4dr car and therefore my first "wagon".

I'm curious - is this normal?

ps. It's most likely due to icy roads :)

Mine likes to spin the front wheels at start up if they are on a painted line, and that line has some water over it, like when it rains. In one instance I stepped on the gas, the car sat there for a fraction of a second, the RPMs shot up to 4000 rpm, before the car rolled far enough forward to get off the paint, at which point the tires chirped and the car lurched forward. Very embarrassing - it sounded and looked just like an inexperienced driver dropping the clutch. (This is an automatic.)

haha yea I get that during the summer if I whip out to pass a slow driver and jam on the line it'll chirp a bit lol

ahhh, I think It might be the slippery surface your driving on and you might need a new set of tires. What do you have for tires currently.

Unless you have a big turbo you need better tires and 1st gear from what I remember in stock form you do have to ease into it.

If it's really slippery/slushy then sometimes i just start in 2nd gear, which helps great deal.

wheelspin? weird. if anything id get wheel hop.

i never peel out unless its slightly wet or glazed with snow, even salt.

but never burned out with clear ground.

Wow, first time i have seen this when the guy is driving a Protege!

Sounds like it's time to get better tires to me, and ease on the gas a little smoother

Definitely it was the slippery paint line - the tires are fine (Falken Ziex ZE-512, at the time that happened). The car never does anything like that on pavement. Well, at least not with both wheels. Accelerating into a right turn, from a complete stop, across a wet gutter sometimes spins the right wheel, but that's the differential doing its thing.

Tires are just regular winter tires with plenty of tread left.

Happens on dry roads, however now that i think of it, there is probably salt all over the roads. Maybe I should be calling it wheelhop, but in the end, I just sit there and spin my wheels.

edit: car is also 5spd.

edit2: im not doing this purposely and im not a terribly fast driver. im pretty easy on the car in general.

Wheelhop would be bouncing and slamming the passenger side wheel. Check your side and rear motor mounts. Side mount upgrade helps incredibly.

huh

Keep spinning them until you hit rim. that will give you some traction

(piss)

Yes, it's normal for wagons. They all do this. On a serious note, in normal conditions my auto does not spin the tires. I am envisioning you lighting up one tire at a stoplight with plumes of smoke. Maybe your e-brake is on? Most likely you need new tires or it is wet/icy/sandy etc.
