'03 Protege
Okay, this is for all guys that went from a stock NA fs-de protege to a fs-det. I want to know what you guys needed to do for the turbo setup. thinking of getting the thunder manifold, do the piping myself, and sourcing a turbo. I'm going to do an unichip piggyback first, but after that I'm going to go boosted. so let me know what you guys had to do to install the turbo set up, and thanks in advance.

by the time you spend all that money on a turbo kit you'll have enough for a nice msp... sell your protege and buy an msp, not that hard

by the time i buy the msp, Im going to have buy the stock protege body. I want to build a turbo protege with a stock body. That way I can learn how my turbo setup is, not just buying it, like half the turbo guys out here. Also for those who are driving converted fs-det's I am curious if the motor seems reliable. I know higher boost on our compression is not the best idea, but I heard the necessary precautions 8 and 10psi is safe.

some have bad luck with 10psi others run it for years wnp, I say read up and watch the forums for parts and start saving.

Lol, obvisouly you haven't looked hard enough for turbo parts for the regular NA proteges.

right now I'm buying a MSP turbo manifold and intake manifold for $175 for both, I am buying my FMIC back from my buddy with a MSP for $100, and I can find a T28 for a damn good price, I believe protege garage sells MSP ECU's for like $300, and that would leave me with a down pipe which I can make myself or have made for cheap, a BOV which I can also find for cheap, and intercooler piping which maybe not cheap but isn't hard to fabricate or have made.

So add that up, I'm sure its a lot less than selling your NA protege and buying a stock 130whp MSP.

The NA FS-DE's are the same as the MSP...only differences are appearance, and LSD and a cheap turbo kit.

And you can buy the same LSD for I believe $600 or maybe $800 or so for the new 3rd and 5th gears and the LSD as a package kit....so really in all actuality its cheaper to just boost a NA protege over buying a MSP and having no money left for mods.

I think 10psi is pushing it on a stock block/head from the FS-DE...I wouldn't run more than 9psi with a EMS, the MSP ECU is nice, but doesn't give enough fuel/air mix to run 9psi safely. Overall making you lean out.

And don't waste the money on a Unichip...if you read around on here...you'll learn that the Protege's ECU learns around piggybacks...except the Split-Second AFC, which is rather cheap for what it is, but I say save your money up and buy a Haltech or something similar.

learns around piggy backs eh? well im looking at a split second but i am curious about one or two things. how difficult is it for me to install it, and how difficult is it for me to map it? this is my dd.

easy to install... simple to put a map on... tuning it is simple if you know what your doing...

i've been trying to tune mine with a stock p5 ecu and having difficulties richining it enough when i hit above 5psi

installing a turbo is pretty straight foward. If you have all the parts; it pretty much just bolts up, screws in, plugs in and runs...

as for a list of parts you'll need a lot

Pakmanmp5 is selling an almost complete stock msp kit in the F/S section

all that appears to be missing are the oil feed/return lines, stock J and S pipe, and your gonna want to change your exhaust to the MSP one or Racinbeat

Get to reading..your gonna be busy a while.
Best advice in this thread so far. If you don't have extensive mechanical knowledge of these cars then don't even attempt this by yourself. There are plenty of resources on this site so don't feel you have to ask a question everytime you get stuck or something pops in your head. Chances are, someone else before you has encountered the same problem.

Also, if this is your DD, I hope you have another car because there is going to be a decent amount of down-time + time-to-fix-other-errors for this install.

i have a 4 day period between each time i work. I also have a few guys who are more than willing to help me install it. my main curiousity atm is the split second afc. I currently really only have a aem sri installed, and am looking at headers coupled with a racing beat exhaust. my main wonders are if i am able to set it up for each mod i add, and if so i have a laptop on the side where i can just plug her and and go at it.

if your gonna go turbo all that N/A stuff you mentioned (header, SRI) is useless... like i said earlier the SSAFC is easy to install and tune... You could put it in now and tune but if your serious about going turbo i would just wait.

And you will need a "Wideband Air/Fuel Guage" to tune the SSAFC.

Don't even buy a header if your going to go turbo... My suggestion is get all the parts you need to go turbo and make sure you have everything. I installed all my stuff in about 5 hours (with the help of friends). But it took about three days to get everything sorted out. If your lucky you won't run into any problems.

Problems I ran into included leaking oil (fixed). Running a tad lean during boost (still a problem cuz of tuning the SSAFC to P5 ECU... can't seem to get it richer no matter how high i make the voltage). But that should be solved as soon as i recieve my MSP ECU. Well leaking oil was the major problem but was solved in a day or two. Just had to seal up the oil pan tap and run smaller oil feed lines.

If you got everything you need installation shouldn't take longer than a day. Getting everything perfect (or nearly perfect) depends on what problems you run into.

im running my built motor bigger turbo msp as a dd and dont listen to what shift2xlr8 said about the ecu learning around the unichip he has no idea what hes talking about and i bet you if i asked him what the ecu did to learn around a piggyback he would have no idea. Only problem with the unichip is there is no end user tunability. You have to take it to a certified unichip dealer to have a custom tune done for your car

nice, what mileage do you too have,i just hit 60,500, and i want to know if it is safe to boost around this mileage.

i have a 02 protege with a catback and im trying to go turbo, ive done alot of research and its not much help. whats the best turbo to run on a stock engine? i was thinking 7-9 psi.. will the turbo from a mazda cx7 fit a turbo manifold on a protege? what should i to to my car to prepare for the new turbo? keep in mind im on a budget

sub, i just want the info that's coming in on this thread. one day in the far off future i want to boost my mp3. after i pay off my truck though...(pissed)

Boosting a stock 02 Protege (depending on motor) is actually relatively cheap...a lot cheaper than most people think.

Just buy someone's stock MSP Manifold and turbo, most MSP guys decided to go with a bigger turbo and sell their stock manifolds and turbo's for a cheap price to just get it out of their hair.

I found a guy local to me that is gonna sell me his stock intake manifold/turbo manifold/ and AWR rear 95durometer motor mount (6mos old) for like $175 I think I got a very good deal on all of it mainly because the motor mount alone is around $80-$90 and the turbo manifold off the MSP's sometimes are good deals and sometimes you find junk ones that are cracked...just take it to a welder and have them weld it up for you.

I think you could easily boost your car safely for less than $1500, thats being generous with some new parts too. The MSP ECU fits in our cars just fine and I personally think its a better investment than trying to **** with the Split Second AF controller...mainly because I've read a lot that our ECU's learn around any piggy back style AF controllers and therefore making it pointless to buy a AFC other than the Split Second AFC.

For a FMIC, I'd just surf around on Ebay for one, because if you try to go with the SMIC from the MSP you have to get a MSP radiator and it just becomes more of a pain in the ass than anything and no need to waste the money.

If you have any more questions feel free to PM me...I'm deployed in Afghanistan and don't have anything better to do in my free time than to research Protege's and the short cuts to saving money on boosting our cars lol.

Yes its safe. As long as you don't go over kill on the amount of boost and stick to around 6-8psi you'll be good with no worries.
