Quieter exhaust question

First of all, I know I'm a rare case that would actually like a quieter exhaust note, but with a wife and possibly a baby down the road I've got to consider it. Is there an exhaust that will not void my warranty and preferrably doesn't knock off to much hp? Maybe one sold and installed by the dealership? Thanks for the help.

I doubt there is an aftermarket exhaust that is quieter then the stock MS3. You can try the regular 3 hatch cat-back but the piping has a smaller diameter and you'll lose some power there. The stock exhaust for the MS3 is fairly quiet as is for the performance.

I am in a similar situation, but no baby yet, just nagging female problem. Also, sometimes at 6am the drone from my exhaust can get on your nerves (dp/rp stock catback). I know someone on here put a vibrant super quiet resonator where his testpipe was and said it made a big difference. I suggest having one or two of those welded in. They are straight through so you will lose no power!

I like my volume level where it is and personally love the sound of the borla exhaust for our MS3, so I am considering having the vibrant welded in and maybe swapping my back muffler for a borla

Our stock exhaust is the most quiet of all. I would advice you to just shift around 2.5k rpm to 3k rpm, and dont floor the gas pedal too much between gear changes when you are with your family. I dont hear my exhaust when my radio is on and if I go easy on accelerating my car without WOT.

yeah i would go driving around in a car with full exhaust, that way youll appreciate the quiteness of the speed3 =)

LOL... My wife just complains that she can hear me coming down the street at idling speed. I love that. The kid (will be 1 nov. 6th) loves the car and always has. Quieter will not matter to the baby, at all!

I'll probably just tell her I'll look into it and maybe she'll forget about it when she gets her new mazda6. I really love the way the speed3 sounds too.

Methinks the wife is playing the baby card because she doesn't like the sound. Babies like exhaust sound. :D

Yes, she's using the baby card to test the waters of where you will bend in the relationship once there's a third party involved. Stand your ground, or else she'll snatch the alpha status from you by using the "but it's what's best for the baby!" excuse to get her way.

yeah, and then the next thing you know you'll be trading in your speed for a Caravan!!! LOL

You could have a quiter muffler welded into place where the main stock one is located? There is one right after the secondary cat and a smaller resonator type muffler towards the tail end. Replace it with something more muffled I suppose, and you should be good to go.

I like the sound of the stock exhaust but I can see how it would annoy some people with all that droning when decelerating. it's funny however that when accelerating it sounds like a vacuum cleaner due to all the restriction. makes you wonder how much better it would be if it were the opposite.

I've actually heard getting a GHL cat-back reduces the drone effect but who knows

When I first got the car, I thought the same thing. Funny, the sound has grown on me, and now I like it. You could try to sound insulate under the spare tire lid, bnut I don't know how well it would work.

One of the first things I did was put a blanket in with the spare tire,

This has helped with every hatch I've owned. Not necessarily on top of the spare tire, but at least one thick blanket in the trunk has been a cheap way of muffling cabin sounds from the exhaust during road trips.

After running my MINI Cooper S with a full exhaust & CAI, I barely notice the MS3's engine/exhaust noise at all.

But not having studied the MS3 exhaust, I can't give you any solid advice on how to quiet it down. I don't think I would resort to an MZ3 exhaust, as that would reduce the pipe diameter & hurt performance. But you could search for alternative resonators & mufflers that might be quieter.

Hey Bro,

You are going through what I had to endure for sometime now, my end result is a CorkSport CBE. The thing is actually much "quieter" then the stock one. it does not drone like the stock one does, however it does get a bit loud if the car is in stop and go traffic with the windows down, but when theyre up it's all good, and once the exhaust temps drop from cruising you don't notice the exhaust at ALL! My wife noticed the difference RIGHT AWAY after the install, but she started to notice the "loudness" when the windows are down, so now I just drive with the windows up when she's in the car and no issues.

Corksport is your BEST bang for the DOLLAR, plus you pick up ponies and wont' break the bank and the quality is amazing!! but if you really want quiet you'll have to go with a GHL, but that's gonna set you back a good 700 bucks.

Thanks man. It's hard to find anyone that actually tries to make their car quieter. I'll definitely look into the corksport, especially since theirs no negative impact on the horsepower. I cant afford 700 bucks right now so the GHL is definitely out of the question. Thanks for the help!

Nice review and recommendations for the corksport and ghl. I might actually throw on a cbe. Anyone on here running ghl or corksport with no cats???
