Mustang Convertible: Why not?

Just remember, Eric, if you buy the stang, you have to drive like a douchbag, cut people off, weave in traffic, and especially tailgate ANYBODY who's in front of you, even if they're driving 10 miles over the speed limit in traffic. Sorry, just an experience I had this morning...

Not sure if this thread is dead or not, but I've owned a Chevy, two Toyotas, an Isuzu, a Mitsubishi, a Nissan and now two Mazdas, so I'm not going to make any broad, fanboy-driven generalizations based on make. I also come from a family loyal to no brand, as we've had two more Chevys, an Olds, a Plymouth, three Hyundais, a Saturn and the random Ford truck to even things out. The fact of the matter is, no make is exclusive anymore, with every company owning each other and sharing vendors for parts.

That being said, I've put a good many miles in an '03 Mustang V6 5-speed and found it to be a nice ride. I test drove an '05 V6 5-speed and while it has nice power and I love the looks, I can't get over how big and heavy the new Mustangs are. Had they made them Fox body-sized and under 3,000 lbs., I'd probably be rocking a V8 manny tranny right now.

Cool, thanks for the input. The thread isn't dead yet, 'cause I still don't have a car. I may be a while yet, though, we need to get our finances in order before we go making any major purchases!

You still have your P5 and MPV as your haulers, right? Just find a used NA or NB Miata and have fun while getting good gas mileage and paying low insurance prems. I don't think a convertible sports car should be your compromise vehicle.

Drove a GT convertible today. Kid and I both enjoyed ourselves. What a wall of torque that thing has! Wow!

Biggest downside is space. My son is 3, and small for his age, yet the position that the passenger seat had to be in to accommodate him without squishing his feet was extremely far forward and upright. I don't think my wife, who's legs are as long as mine, is going to fit in front of the kid.

...If we can't all ride together in the 'vert with a back seat, why not just save a bunch of money and buy another Miata?

Clearly, I'll need to go test drive again with my wife along! Bummer! ;)

Went back tonight. Dru and Lucas went with me. We actually all fit pretty well. I drove a bit, then we switched, and I didn't feel like I was too close to the dash, even with the kid behind me. :)

There may very well be a Mustang in my immediate future.

Drove a V6 Convertible 5-spd last week. Wasn't bad, decent power, but not awesome power like the GT had. If the insurance isn't a lot cheaper, I can't really see a reason to get the V6.

Tried to go drive a MINI Cooper S 'vert, morons at the BMW dealership couldn't get it out from behind a locked fence! I will be going somewhere else to test-drive one next time!

i know you mentioned a saab 9-3 vert, a buddy of mine has a ng900 saab, and is on his third transmission,or fourth.

obviously im aware you cannot judge saabs by this one story, but ive heard that most of their transmissions are weak.

I'm personally a huge fan of the mini cooper, vert or not. but hell, I've owned a rwd american v8 car, and all handling jokes aside, the torque always made me laugh.

+1 There was nothing like it when I'd put my foot down in the Tempest I had (454 transplant). It was like someone was pushing on my chest and my head would get cemented to the headrest and I'd start giggling. Not to mention all the yummy big block sounds that it made. :D I miss that car.

I know exactly what you're referring to JA, my Dart would make me all giddy when I got on it. Power shifting it 1-2 and 2-3 was downright violent.

i had an 86 monte carlo SS with a corvette LT-1 swap. cam, headers, blah blah blah, the thing was loud as hell and absolutely ridiculous.

Howd we all end up going form muscle cars to imports? I had a 91 camaro z28 tuned port injection with an arizona speed and marine throttle body, ported plenum slp siamesed runners, accel/lingefelter intake manifold, long tubes..... the list goes on. It wasnt the fastest car on the road but itd ass out sideways from a 50 roll with ease and it sounded like itd eat small cities.

As to the me too car comment. (soory for some odd reason i dont have a "quote" button when im at work, makes no sense.) If anyone else is like me, ive had a rare 91 z28 (they didnt make to many artic white hardtop z's), a 1 of 1500 mp3 and a 1 of 2750 msp. I think im done being "different". Im ready to take something common on the road and MAKE it different.

PS: We just got a 2008 shelby gt350 blue vert in at my dealership, and im not a mustang fan but its sex on wheels.

doesnt toyota have the solara in a vert. way different then a mustang but i think they come with a v-6 vert but im not sure about the manual though.
