mazdaspeed protege Engine Swap ideas...

ok, so my msp is about to hit 100k miles and i want to do something special to celebrate

the engine is smoking, but i think is the turbo, not the engine.

i could go all out and buy pistons, rods and a bunch of other crap and make the 2l engine stronger OR...

i could swap out the anemic engine for another one.

here's where it gets interesting...

talking to some people that have 99 or lower proteges, they tell me do a 1.8l BP engine swap...or BPT.

now, they use the same g series tranny as the 2.0l uses, so i still can use my MSP transmission wihtout much modification.

has anyone ever thought about this?

i can't seem to find any info anywhere in google...

Hey, I think Ken from PG had a reply on this same topic. From what he was saying the BP is a better engine. Someone posted about putting the miata engine in a protege.

Go all out and put in a K20 and boost it lol. Mazdaspeed with V-tec and a snail you would be the coolest mo-facker around.

on a serious note...

i don't forsee anything crazy about installing a 1.8l miata engine.

lets hypothetically think that the engine matched right up to the stock motor mounts.

any ideas as to how to make the msp tranny fit the 1.8lbp?
i've heard fitting it with a kia 93-97 bellhousing will work.

saw a guy with a 1990 civic hatch with a K20 in it..

you should see the trouble that he had to put that engine in..

though the result is incredible with a 1900 lbs car.

It bolts directly to your stock G series tranny. Remember the BP was a front wheel drive engine before going to rear wheel drive.

I came from honda/acura forums cause of my old Integra. I saw a guy throw a K20 into his Integra plus hybrid intake and headers. A shop did everything and ended up running him something like $20,000!!!! Just buy the type-s for that price! Damn!

Crazy Mazda guys, going from bigger to smaller engines!

You'd tell people, yeah I swapped the 2.0 liter for a 1.8 liter. They'd be like, wtf?

hahaha, yea..only if they knew how ****** the design on the 2 liter was!...

anyways, come on guys....this is not a civic forum....
let's brainstorm...

with a full standalone i think we can forget about wiring harnesses, or not?

Corksport did this with a 3rd gen protege. It takes quite a bit of fabrication to get the 1.8 to mount up

Why don't you celebrate by solving the smoking issue and then fortify your engine so its no longer anemic. Just a thought.

hahah, hey...i've thought about it and yes..it will probably be the best way to go....but is not hard enough!! j/k

from afar, it doesn't seem to be much problem as the 1.6l engine also came in a 3rd gen protege...don't those two engines are very alike?

I think the BP has shorter and stronger rods. There was a post some time back that a member boosted a stock BP and got very good numbers. Maybe you might get in touch with those guys in PR and see what they say.

Any other engine that you can somewhat easily fit into the 3rd gen Pro is going to take just as much money to make a lot horsepower with.

Bumping back to a 1.6 or 2.5 KLZE is a lot of work for no net gain.

klze has been done...but i think is too heavy
the 1.6l is not worth it imo
the 1.8bpt sounds much better...
