so, i went to the dealer, and drove the car for over 15 miles. not a single complaint from the dealer, unlike the other mazda dealers i went to. on the freeway, even on 5th and 6th gears, the car had good acceleration. the gobs of torque is definitely a good thing. i actually had to try hard not to rear end the other cars.

the clutch and shifter were pretty good. i could shift smoothly enough.

probably the only negative is the road noise and exhaust hum/drone. whenever i let go of the gas pedal, i notice the drone. i guess only time will tell whether i get used to it, or get annoyed.

oh, i forgot to mention, yes i bought the car.

i got the gray GT without any options, for $200 over invoice.

the same day i got the ms3, i sold my 2005 prius with 78k miles. i couldn't believe someone paid $19k for it.

i think tomorrow my wife gets to ride in the ms3. let's see what happens.

Give it a few days and you won't notice the exhaust that much.
Coming from a Prius to a MS3 your finally just hearing what power sounds like.
After all it is not a Lexus or a BMW. The wife may notice it is louder coming from those two vehicles.
If it is too loud for her you can always take her car when going somewhere together.
You are going to love the MS3. CONGRATULATIONS.

umm, she's too smart to fall for that. my prius is 4 yrs old. she knows cars depreciate fastest during the first 3 yrs, then after that, it's more a gradual decline. unfortunately, i'm in the gradual decline phase. with gas price factored in, a ms3 would cost me $1500/yr more in gas cost than the Prius.

does the ms3 give you $1500 worth of fun every year?

I would probably pay $1500 NOT to drive something called a Prius.

With gas prices being as high as they are, I'm not surprised someone would pay top dollar for a used Prius.

oh yeah, she agreed with me that the prius probably has reached close to the peak in price. the combination of high demand for the california carpool lane sticker and toyota having trouble ramping up production, has contributed to a surge in price. my prediction is that toyota will really crank out the prius within several months. also, the carpool sticker program may expire in 1-2 yrs. so i feel that it was smart to sell now.

so far, i'm happy with the ms3. it's the most powerful and best handling car i've owned. when my wife is in the car, i need to drive slowly and shift smoothly, and keep the rpm under 3000. one time i stepped on the gas and revved the engine: the surge in acceleration made her yell "oh". i thought she might be entertained by it, but she just said to drive safely, especially with kids in the car. she's right. i've been making more solo trips, thinking of errands to run, 1 trip per errand.

She was commuting to her work via an Nissan Xterra, 45 mins each way (works part time). The Xterra is a total dog with mileage to match. Probably 14 mpg or less.

So this would be her work car for mileage and my play car when she was not working. I really didn't want it go this way, but it was my line and I was sticking to it.

It just could not have turned out better. She drives it to work for the first time and while making a left hand turn out of the parking garage she hits the gas like she would in the Xterra and the MS3 come alive with a little torque steer and almost puts her into a ditch. No more MS3 for her she says. Thankfully a few months later she gets a job just a few miles from the house...so no more issues driving the Xterra.

Now actually going into the ditch would have been real bad, but again luck was on my side.

So...I gambled that she would initially hate the car and it worked. I work out of the house, so this was a real long shot for me to justify.

Now a year later she will take the MS3 out every now and then, and she does like the car. She just likes the Xterra more for its size and sitting up much higher.

Well I do. So I don't do chores. Seems like a fair trade to me.

Not sure if this is dead or not, but if you make 2 mil a year, what are you doing driving a mazda? No offense to mazda owners and people who like mazdas, but for that kind of money, you'd think one would be more inclined to drive - oh, let's say - a porsche, merc or beemer at least? Just my $0.02.

I said I run a business that brings in 2 mil, by myself, no other employees, every dollar goes through my hands, but I work for a company. I wish I made 2 mil. a year.

I make enough to live comfortably. What I lack in cars, I make up for in house.

I know doctors that drive Toyota corollas and Honda civics’. Just because someone makes good money doesn’t mean they want to spend it on cars. Part of the reason someone might be rich is because they’ve made smart financial decisions in life, buying expensive cars is obviously not a smart financial move. This of course isn’t true for everyone but it’s kind of ignorant to think someone who drives an affordable car isn’t making good money. To a lesser degree a lot of us here are driving around in speed3’s but could’ve afforded an EVO or better but perhaps we other priorities in life. There are some / many people driving around in expensive cars on credit that they can't really afford.

i completely agree. i don't want to spend too much on a depreciating asset either. now, a doctor friend of mine just bought a porsche 911. i'm supposed to test drive his car soon. i'll report back to you guys on how my ms3 compares to the 911 !!
