stupid cobalt ss

I dont own either car but I have test driven the ms3 and test driven the cobalt ss and red line ion. The cobalt sucked and starting having engine issues ( great way to sell a car). The sales guy even told me that I was making a mistake and this car was poorly built. On the other hand the redline ion drove a lot better. The car reved nicely as compared to its twin ( cobalt ss). The looks of the car was probably the only thing that I didnt like. By the way I have tested two cobalts with identical problems and was told two different times by the sales guy to not purchase the car. Now as for the ms3, and I thought that it was flawless, but in the end I decided to keep my problematic msp ( car is almost paid off and I want a lexus or infiniti m35).

Lexus or infiniti huh..... thats a big jump. Why would you even test drive a ms3 if you say you want a 40 thousand dollar car.

HMM okay first post! I've been lingering the forums just reading.

I am debating between the MS3 and Cobalt SS turbo. Both cars do have their pros and cons, most of which has been listed.

First, the new SS's are built but on a quality control hold up at the factory. There are thousands of SS's waiting to be shipped, so we should be seeing them at dealers and on the streets anytime now.

Now there is a big problem with the new SS/TC. The transmission used is the GM f35, which is rated to 350 Nm torque = 258 hp. The car is advertised at 260 hp.

As it stands now (from what we have been told) the ECU limits hp to 260. This means you can throw all the bolt-ons you want on the car and not gain a single hp because of the ECU limitation. Also, I believe chevy will NOT release any stage kits for the car b/c of the transmission limits.

Stock for stock the two cars will perform identically on the track, but a minorly modified MS3 should take an SS pretty easily.

Oh, and why am I considering the SS? The 08's have 2.9% for up to 72 months + 1500 GM loyalty cash back. Plus the girl hates the look of the hatch. (but I like it, and thats all that matters!) I am going tomorrow to talk to the chevy and mazda dealers, and probably be taking the better deal.

Well hmm. are you buying the car for yourself or for your girl? My wife didnt like the hatch until I told her I was buying her one and took it for a test drive, now she loves it and doesnt like the sedan anymore.

Not sure where the tranny and ECU information came from but it sounds suspect. but if there is any weight to it, I would not take the chance.

You said there is thousand's of SS's waiting to be shipped. that alone is reason enough for me not to buy a chevy, I like having a somewaht rare car

Yobrigidi go drive both cars and then make your decision on which one you like the best, dont let anybody's opinion affect your buying decision, there are alot of fanboys out there. The cobalt ecu is not a problem at all hahn racecraft is already tunning that engine which is on the solstice and the sky redline, these cars do make more hp with bolt-ons without tunning them, so I dont know why the cobalt shouldn't. I had a cobalt and I liked it but I had bad luck with it, but I was the only one, alot of my friends still have theirs and they have not had a single problem with the car. I drive a mazdaspeed 3 now and yes I love it but the cobalt was fun as hell to drive too.

Oh don't worry...if I am making the payments then I am the only one who cares about it. If anyone else would like to chip in on the payments then they can have a say too.....

I am going tomorrow to test drive a MS3 and cobalt SS/SC. The only worry I have about the cobalt ECU is in regards to warranty work. I could not tune a car while it is under warranty. Same goes for the MS3. Whichever I choose, the car will remain mostly stock.

I sat in both the cobalt SS and MS3 at the auto show and LOVED the MS3 interior. The cobalt interior flat out sucked. It will have a lot of ground to make up to catch up to the MS3.

If you test drive the Cobalt SS/SC it's not going to feel anything like the SS/TC. The SC was pretty anemic power wise and didn't have the same amount of time and effort put into suspension tuning that the TC has. It'll be slow and disappointing compared to the car you're actually looking into.

+1

and they've redone the interior.

Yeah, I realize that. I was mainly wanting to get an idea for the size and "feel" of driving (like seating height, shifter location, stuff like that) I did go out and test drive it today. It felt like I was sitting on phone books. In my G6 coupe that I currently have, I sit waaay further down into the car. I didn't have the time to go check out the speed 3 though, unfortunately.

So the G6 is kind of longer / bigger and perhaps slightly glorified cobalt. I know he said G6 btw, I was just asking a question. Re badged engineering FTL!

The G6 is HUGE compared to the cobalt/G5. It has the same wheelbase as the sedan. The rear seats have a ton of room. Mine has the 3900 engine with 6MT. Much nicer than a glorified G5, just not quite quick enough or agile enough for me.

I had a Cobalt SS to play around with on the interstate on Saturday. he kept up really well with me & I was surprised he knew what I was since I'm debadged. He also waved when he took his exit :) It gets me giggly when I get someone trying to play :)

Must have been stage 2 or something because a stock one doesn't stand a chance on the hwy.

actually depends on the drivers mod. Seeing as stephanie is a female driver, id say he had the advantage.
