New Intake, now surging

So I put on my new diy intake tonight:

spectre maf tuning kit (adjustable inner diameter, mine set to 2.75")

Spectre cone filter

Its awesome in 1st through 4th, I can definitely tell a difference

In 5th and 6th gear the car will surge, power up and down

I can hear the turbo surging (I hear it suck a lot of air then not a lot of air then a lot etc etc)

I did unhook the battery cable for around an hour. Does the car just need time to learn?

Any ideas?

How many miles did you put on it since the reset? A good 10-15 miles should be enough to help the engine relearn to breathe.

Mine has done this before as well and I have the MSCAI. Normally though, it was only in sixth gear.

What rpm are you hitting the throttle at? Do you have any other mods?

my car does this with the ms cai only in temps over 75 degrees.
this car sucks ! fuel cut below 40 degrees, boost surge above 75 degrees.....PITA !! the truth is you are putting too much load on the car in a high gear. if you have to acclerate .....downshift ! i know my car only does it if i roll on the gas from an upper gear. if i run through the gears it wont do it .

your getting boost spike wich cuases fuelcut in the upper gears.. As far as I know the cia that does this the least is cp-e cia

Its got around 20 miles on it now, its not the intake noise that I think is surging, the noise comes and goes loud then quite, its the new intake noise that comes and goes. No other mods.

If I floor it while doing around 50 it'll do it, I guess the boost controller isn't doing its job.

I tried it again today and it did it in 5th and 6th and then later not in sixth. So I guess its just loading the motor up and overboosting then fuel cut?

So.....All intakes do this except the cpe?? Does the cobb?

I don't want to act like you're a 3yr old, but you're sure it's not the blow off sound? It makes a cha-cha-cha sound?

It has around 20 miles on it since the intake & computer reset 7700 total so its broken in.

I know that its NOT the blow off valve sound(this is my 2nd turbo car, first was a 3rd gen RX7), the car surges in power and you can hear the turbo and intake sound get loud then quite. I thinks its fuel cutting like the above say. I just didnt think that it would happen with only an intake. Makes me afraid to get a down pipe.

Valid question about the BOV though

Either way, I just wont floor it in 5th or 6th on the highway from such a low speed.

People with the Cobb SRI, does this happen to you?

I think its the ecu making sure you dont go over 15 or 16 psi. These cars need to be tuned to run correctly when modded.

That sound you describe on your first post does not lead me to the turbo The turbo will sound like a high pitched whirring noise till you let off throttle then a quick psssht. If the drivetrain is jerking then you want to solve this asap

There is the high pitched whirring and the intake suck sound, they BOTH surge up and down at the same time and the car gains and loses power.

I know that it is boost coming up and then going down.

My first mod was a cobb intake. It drove like it was stock....but faster :)

Vacuum leak at the higher boost levels? Valve (diverter ) sticking , Worst one would be Spectre and mazda's ecu arguing. But I am not that smart about these cars yet. There are some pretty smart folks here that should speak up soon enough. But think about what controls your boost!

I'm going to check all of my pressure tubes tomorrow and make sure that they are all tight and what not, I just drove it to work and it only did it in 6th this time.

iti si simple its called boost surge. it happen when you put too much load on the motor. solution.... dont flog it in 6th gear. downshift a gear or 2, then go WOT ! it is just much more common when you let the turbo breath with a CAI. cp-e and cobb are not immune to it either... some cars do it some dont, it depends on you set-up and driving style.

my ms cai doesn't do this. Are you sure your intake is designed correctly? You may be getting turbulence and inaccurate reading by the MAF sensor. Tru-boost is correct in that you should down shift instead of flooring the car in 6th gear. Its really hard on your engine.

Boost leak through the BOV?

Could be boost leak but I hear the turbo slow down.

Either way, I pulled code P2187, too lean on idle today. I dont really think I'm worried about being lean on idle. Should I be??
