spun bearing 2xxx miles

He sounds like one of those boners that insists on speeding through subdivisions when there are kids about, claiming that the car was "meant to be driven this way."

You want me to tell you who is a boner? You don't know me so if you want start with the name calling lets take it to PMs.

All these people that are posting are doing so with so little info, how can anyone draw any meaningful conclusions from what's being said. No one is gonna admit to actually contributing to the problems and getting people to admit they had mods is like pulling teeth.

lol the warrenty card is great its like

driver heard noise coming from engine, car stopped and would not start, upon roadside inspection found hole in engine block, Solution: replace motor

Why do you automatically assume they modded or this kind of thing was their fault. Isn't it possible they just had bad luck? You feel it is your mission to get down to the bottom of it and prove it was their fault?

First of all, an engine dying so early (at 2k miles) is very unusual. Anybody with a reasonable amount of intelligence will want to know a little more about the situation before assuming the engine just broke on it's own. Yes it is possible and I believe in the OP's case it did happen but that doesn't mean that every other instance is the same.

1 person admitted to modding and I recognized the other from previous posts he made about his mods so no, I didn't just assume. Maybe you should read a bit more and do it slowly enough so everything can sink in before making asinine comments.

He should have been driving the car like it was meant to be driven. Sheesh.

You don't know me...

How old are you? Maybe.... 18? So.... multiply by 3.... is it too late for a 54th term abortion? Consult your doctor. Nobody here cares to listen to your self-righteous "drive the car like a race car" mentality.

Go troll somewhere else. You obviously have nothing to contribute.

OK let's have things work out here, I've been reading this forum since the very first day the Mazdaspeed 3 came out,, as I said before, I have two friends that owns this little rockets thats why I bought one they are the best bang for the buck, and of course they have mods but it was to early for modding mine,, with 2k , the first 1k was for break in process shifting from 3 to 4k rpms, I worked for 9 years in the automotive industry, I now about mazda, mitsubishi, Kia, hyundai, Ford . Belive me I saw a lot of weird things ,

this is not my first turbo car, I now about mods,, and my speed wasn't moded, right now is running ok again,, I don't have to probe nothing to you,, the only person that have to see if it is moded or not is the Warranty guy send it by Mazda, and he went to the shop to see it by it self,, and there it is, a new short block, so if you have a little more inteligence as you claim answer me this,, what are the reasons for an engine to bend rods??

this thread took a strange turn into the Twilight Zone........
what's with all the hot-headedness? and in a thread about some poor guy who pulled a lemon out of a basketful of apples? I don't get it guys?

my $.02 worth on the 2.3L DISI boosted engine is that the one in my MS3 is a real gem. I've got over 34,000 miles on it in 14 months of driving it. And my driving style is a longway from grandma like.

I burn almost no oil (been using Royal Purple syn since 10k miles). I tend to shift always at 5,500 rpm (no reason to go higher other than a noise maker). I believe I hit the rev-limiter one time only during all my driving. This is not a high revving motor. Loads of torque down low, so why go anywhere else?

I've participated in probably more road course track events than (perhaps) any other MS3 in the country. I'm registered to attend my 8th event in my MS3 in two weeks.

I have avoided the "boy-racer" mods like MBC and have no desire for one of those piggyback units. I will give the new Cobb AP v.2 some serious thought.

My mods are modest: ETS 3.25" TMIC, Cobb SF intake, Forge BPV, ProSport mech boost gauge, Koni Yellow shocks, MS red springs/rear camber links, Rota 18 x 8 P1 wheels, and soon to install 235/40/18 Azenis RT-615 sport tires.

Since you have nothing to prove to me, I don't have to believe a word you say just because you came on here and typed it. It works both ways.

But to answer your last question, a lot of things can cause the rods to bend. Poor maintenance, no oil, bad oil pump, oil starvation, mods, detonation, hydrolock, engine defect etc.

Update: Mazda sent my dealer the regular 2.3, not the mzr turbo LOL. He is getting the whole engine, not just the shortblock. The car spun a bearing causing the piston to go wacko, which in turn hit and bent a valve. Lots of scoring on cylinder wall apparently.

wow that sounds like bs. I spun 2 bearings on my old car (4.6 V8 interference) and all it did cause major rod knock no hitting of valves at all. Hitting the valves is either valve float or bad timing which considering how the timing gears and crank pully have no key ways that seams like a more logical issue. But what would I know I've only torn apart about 6 of these engines with more to come. And I can tell you that dealers come up with excuses all the time.

So, are you just bent on trying to disprove everyone's issues on the interwebs? Give the guy the benefit of the doubt. You're obviously not the only one who knows a damn about cars.
