How fast is the 2008 MZ5 automatic?

Hi:

Has anyone found a road test for the 2008 MZ5? I would like to know
how long it takes the new 5-speed automatic to go 0-60mph.

I have searched the net for a long time now and the only road tests
I've found are for the 2005-2007 four speed auto - and they seem to
run it in about 9-10 seconds. I would think the '08 5-speed should be
able to do better.

It is .1 second faster 0-60.

The question is, what do you need the extra .1 for?

my 5 is brand new so haven't really got on it yet. it has a smidgen of 'fun factor' in it but mostly because my brain is expecting full on mini-van handling when in fact, the steering is crisp and responsive, the sound in higher RPM's isn't painful to listen to and the ergonomics are good in the drivers seat.

I'd say it hits 60 around the 9 sec mark under full throttle and a little tailwind : )

Good way of putting it. Look, it'll probably lose to virtually anything you pull up next to at a red light. On the other hand, much more importantly, it'll get up and go with plenty of gusto when merging onto the highway. It's a happy rev'er and above 4k it pulls nicely.

If you're buying a 5 as a play car, it's the wrong choice. If you're buying the 5 as an all-around package family hauler, then it's a great choice (and you shouldn't be messing with Civic riceboys in the first place... it's bad for your health).

Original poster here. I asked how fast the MZ5 '08 auto is for two reasons.

First I wanted to find out how much of an improvement the 5speed auto is over the 4speed auto. ( I know it improved the gas mileage by about 3mpg.)

Second I wanted to be able to compare it to our current ride - a '06 Saturn Vue w/ the 6cyl which makes the 0-60 run in about 7.5 seconds.

I'm just curious to see how the new MZ5 stacks up. We have already decided we are getting a MZ5 GT. It suits our needs. Two adults & a senior
dog all who have arthritis. We like the looks, interior flexibility, and most of all improved gas mileage.(drive2)

You’ll definitely notice an engine performance hit with the change to the Mazda5, especially when loaded and from a stand still, as compared to the VUE V6. That’s not to say the 5 is a snail, because it’s not, but the 2.3L is arguably the weakest component of the car. It’s a fabulous engine, just a bit anemic for the 3400lb 5 in certain situations.

All that being said, in a year and a half of owning my 5, I’ve never once complained about not having enough engine power.

I've owned a lot of quick/fast cars. The Mazda5 doesn't bug me. The engine is flexible enough to get the job done, just don't expect to be slamming people back in their seats. I have no trouble cruising at 80-90MPH. Mine is manual though....and I've heard it makes quite a difference vs the old auto. Not sure how much difference it makes compared to the new auto, but the final drive is still better suited for acceleration in the manual and the car does weigh less.

oh and to the OP...you must have one of those Honda-motor VUEs...yeah?

Yup

Not that we lean on it much though. We have been very gentle with her.
After about 21 months she has only 10k miles and 80% tread life left. If it weren't for the lousy gas mileage in city driving (mostly very short trips). She'll do 27mpg on the highway.

With the Vue we can go real light on the throttle. With the Mazda5 I guess we will just have to dig a little deeper into the throttle. No big deal.

A 2006 Motor Trend COTY (Car of the Year finalist) review of the Mazda5 posted the following:
"All that additional space and hardware boosts curb weight by about 500 pounds relative to the Mazda3, but that fatter torque curve and overall gearing that's about six percent shorter help spur the Mazda5 to 60 mph just 0.8 second off the 3's pace, at 8.5 seconds."

That's about right. It feels like a mid-8 second car (0-60). The lack of v6 torque will always have it "feeling" slower than an Oddyssey, Vue, or Sienna...but it's really pretty comparable.

2nd time I read 8.5 secs 0-60mph (2thumbs), much faster than the Honda Civic I owned (oh shoot, a Civic, since when that counts anyway)...
