Problem....loud pitch kinda squeek

Problem: Loud Squeak While Driving

Not really sure what happened. I was driving and all of the sudden, I heard a loud pitch kinda squeak, but not really a squeak, really tough to explain. No dummy lights, no performance, braking or steering difference, just a loud noise, it would go away if you moved the wheel to the left or to the right, but when going straight, it made the noise

I pulled off to see if I could see something, couldn't, everything looked okay, nothing hanging, rubbing etc, so I just kept going, wanted to get it home, then a car pulled out in front of me, I had to brake hard, after that it went away for a bit, came back a few seconds later. All I was thinking about was calling my manager at work, telling him I'd be late tomorrow as I needed to drop the car off at the dealer, then the noise went away, no difference in anything. It went away for the last 1.5 miles of the trip. I just took it out again, no noise.
-any ideas?
-Should I at least get it checked out or wait to see if it does it again?
-the car only has 4k on it.
-I'm puzzled.

This might be the dragging brake caliper noise that many people have complained about. If it is, it should go away on it's own. It could also be a pebble that got suck between the pad and caliper. It'd give it another week before taking it in.

Did the noise change with wheelspeed?

No, well, when i was forced to brake hard, it stopped briefly, but started again, and if I were to slow or accelerate, it didn't change, ended up going away on its own....it hasn't done it again since, but I've only been out for a 5 mile errand....I'll see tomorrow, I have a 40 mile one way commute to work.

If its brake related look at the disk if something is dragging you should have either some kind of scratch or even a gouge in the rotor. May be a wheel bearing too.

I'm leaning on the brakes being the problem here.

I did, nothing on the rotor. I'm puzzled. Can anyone fill me in on this "caliper dragging" problem?

take the wheel off and look at the back side of the rotor too.

Just my two cents but I doubt its the wheel bearing though thats a possibility its only got 4k miles so not likely.
The dragging caliper though im not sure with the MS3 usually means that one side of the floating calliper is stuck to the rotor, simple fix just lube it up with some graphite lube on the metal to metal surface and a silicon grease on the sliding pins.

DISCLAIMER!! I do not own a MS3 yet. These are just my opinions as I am a mechanic, however I am not familiar with mazdas so i could easily be wrong, just my thoughts.

A couple people on the 'other' forum had this issue early on. Basically at lower speeds, they heard a wooooooooooo until they hit the brakes. It would go away at higher speeds and happen again when they slowed down. But in almost every case it went away soon after.

I had this problem later on (around 20k miles) and it happened after hard driving. I stopped at a light and when taking off heard the sound. It even felt like I was slightly on the brake when I wasn't. I pumped the brakes a few times and it went away and never came back.

No, I think this was different....I know what a bad wheel bearing sounds like, this wasn't a moan, and it went away if you turned the wheel in either direction, not just one. And there was no performance, braking or steering differences. Maybe something just got stuck up in there although I don't know what it would've been. If it comes back, I'll get it checked out

Hope it doesn't come back, as long as not scoring rotor, wait for tire rotation and have dealer look. It might be good to get on record with them if you are letting them do maintenance Good luck!

What was the ambient temperature while this occurred? It sounds like it may be related to a suspension bushing issue that is common for this car at temperatures below 11F. Does it sound like your tire is rubbing on the fender, or worse? How cold has the weather been while you are driving when you hear the noise? I know it gets pretty cold in PA, so, this is something that I have probably encountered before in good old cold Minnesota.

It was above freezing outside....It sounded more like an old neon braking, if you remember, those mid 90's neons had a squeeky braking issue...except I wasn't braking. It hasn't happened since so I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope it was a fluke
