I'm In The Market For A Cai Or Sri So I've Been Playing Around With The Idea Of Getting A Cobb Sri Or A Ms Cai.

From What I've Been Reading This Is What I've Gathered From The Two Intake Systems...

the Cobb Sri Intake Is Much Less $$$ And Easier To Install And Gives The Car A Decent Increase In Hp & Tq And Sounds Nice

The Ms Cai Is A Lot More $$$ And Is Harder To Install And Gives The Car Expectional Gains In Hp & Tq And Sounds Even Better. Oh, Hydrolock Is More Likely :( (YES I'VE CHECKED WITH MY DEALER AND THEY INDEAD TOLD ME THERE WOULD BE NO PROBLEMS WITH WARRENTY WORK IF I HAD THEM INSTALL IT )

I'm Sorta Leaning Towards The Ms Cai Because I Would Get It Installed At My Dealership And Not Have A Problem Latter On With Warrenty Work. Yes This Would Cost About $500.00 After Taxes With Laber, But It Would Give Me Peace Of Mind To Some Extent.

Any Thoughts / Opinions?

I've got the MS CAI. Sounds pretty good and the power gain was nice. The install wasn't that hard, anyone can do it.

OK!

I have both I recently switched to the cobb SRI much happier power is the same sound is a little different.... Do your self a favor and pick up the cobb SRI easy to install and maintain and more money left over to buy more goodies like a BPV because the stock one sucks.... IF you absolutely had to bring the car back for some thing and wanted to you could swap back to the stock box in 30 min easy.

Why did you switch to the cobb SRI? Was the MS CAI that much of a headache to maintain??

Also, I had no idea that putting the stock box back on was that easy...

I'm not absolutely sure but from the dyno's I've seen the MS CAI give an avg of around 20hp and 20ft tq to the wheels. THe cobb SRI gives like 11hp and like 10ft tq doesn't it?

you cant go wrong with the MS CAI, its not difficult to install, the instructions that comes with it are for dummies, you dont have to take the front bumper off, just the left wheel, you can do it in 45 minutes, plus, its mazda branded, sounds great, performs great and retains your warranty.
And about that hydrolock, unless you live in the amazon, you are going to be fine, people here is paranoid.

Go with the MS Cai, i promise you, youll be happy you did.

Well, I'm leaning that way for sure..

I'll sell you mine(ms cai)....cheap. I just got the turbo and Im gonna go with the atp setup.

Unless it's the same dyno, same day, back to back, the numbers mean little. I've also had both and prefer the Cobb for several reasons. I'm not going to go into them as there are already a couple threads I've posted in.

For the most part you should be happy with the MS CAI power wise. But I wouldn't pay the dealer to do it. It's a rip off. Do it yourself and purchase it used. It's not like a used intake is any less of a metal tube. I had it and paid out the ass for a dealer install and regretted it ever since.

Why did you switch your MS CAI for a COBB SRI?

I was thinking about having the dealer do it so I can keep my powertrain warrenty.

Well think about this. I see in your sig you're thinking about a turboback or catback and you already have the su motor mount. With those mods or even just the su mount, a crappy dealer can refuse to work on your car or even contribute (when they call up Mazda) to your warranty being voided (for the parts affected). So you're already playing with fire and how far you can go depends heavily on your dealer. Even if you have them install the ms cai, if you later show up with the turboback or even something as mundane as a boost guage, they can still give you a hard time.

I would discuss mods with them and hear what their policies are (if you haven't done so already). Also, you should be prepared to remove mods when necessary.

If your not a mechanical person and you care about your warranty, let the dealer do it. Im going to, I dont even change my own oil. If your good at working on cars and can swap the cai in and out without any evidence anything aftermarket was there, do it yourself. Some people say the ms cai is always warrantied but dealers around me say they have to install it and if i did it there could be problems. I dont know about you but I dont want to go through all of that if something goes wrong in the future. 500 is worth it for me for 20 extra wheel horse under warranty.

Well, I was also leaning more towards the Mazdaspeed catback exhaust..
Doubt my motor mount would ever come up as an issue.

I'm thinking if I do the MS CAI + MS cat back exhaust along with a short shifter, rear motor mount and perhaps a boost guage I don't think they'll give me a problem.
I think the real problems would arise when you start upping the boost and modifying the exhaust systems with mid pipes, race pipes, deleting cats and such. ANd the obvious things like turbo upgrades, major engine mods, etc.

The mods I'm planning on are really minor in comparison. I just wanna be fast enough to run low to mid 13's with drag radials.

A catback in itself isn't going to do much for performance though. But I agree, upping the boost and deleting cats and such are a recipe for warranty issues. My next mod is a SS as well. I'm thinking about the TWM but Cobb is supposed to be releasing one as well.

Yeah you know I'm just trying to play it on the "safer" side I guess..
I'm pretty much set on the TWM SS - read great reviews about it.

With the whole "modding" thing I agree with you. It really depends on what kind of relationship you have with your dealer. And yeah, with the cobb sri is such a simple piece it can't be that hard to change out. I'm sure there are plenty other MS3 owners that are modded out the ass and have no problems getting warrenty work done.

You make a great point.. However, I go to the mazda dealer for all my services and they would see that I have an other than Mazdaspeed intake and might take note of that. This could potentially cause me problems later
