o2 sensor fixed, but check engine light still on

Hi all,

I have a 2002 protege5 and I had a check engine light. The guy at the emissions was kind enough to print out the error message for me. I took it to the local goodyear and he told me it was a front o2 sensor and it would cost over $300 to replace. I found the part on Amazon for $35.00 and checked out the wrench from the autopart store and replaced it myself....problem is the check engine light is still on. How do I turn it off? I certainly don't want to pay a shop to do this since the whole point of my repair was to avoid the shop costs!!!

Thanks,

EDIT: Nate beat me to it...

Did you try reseting the ECU (unplugging the negative terminal connection for a few minutes then reconnecting it)? If you didn't do this or have the code cleared it will take several miles for the ECU to realize the O2 sensor is good and turn off the CEL. If you did all that then the new O2 sensor did not do the trick. I have to ask, did you use a real Mazda part or one of the universal Bosch sensors?

EDIT:^^^^both beat me to it

you have to reset the computer...disconnect the battery and hold down your brakes for like ten minutes to drain all the power out of the system...then reconnect and it should be gone...but dont go to the emissions place yet...the computer needs to relearn the program, so you have to drive around for like 100 miles or so(i would go a little more)...then if you have no check engine light oyu can go for the test.

If you have check engine light(CEL) and you go for the test it will automatically fail, no matter what the cause of the CEL is.

Cool! Thanks, guys! I knew you would come to the rescue. That's the same advice the autoparts guy gave me too, but I haven't tried it yet..I thought I would ask my fellow p5 boys for the digs before I got dirtier.. lol

Luckily, I don't need to pass emissions for 3 months.

Thanks!! I'll go do it!

and Magnum, I'm fairly certain that it wasn't a mazda part, but it was only $37 bucks or something like that!! I'm an artist, I do what I can!

Ciao boys!

PS. It is exactly the same part that 2 different stores are selling for over $250....just for your info.

plug and play, no wire splicing or anything like that.

If it works, it works, but I know of a few people (my g/f included) that have run into problems with the universal sensors; I'm not really sure what it is. If for some reason the sensor still isn't working and you're told it's bad (what happened to my g/f) check out www.onlinemazdaparts.com for the O2 sensor. You can get them there for like $110 which is still a little pricey but not as bad as it would be from the dealer or independent garages.

oh, so you want me to go out there right now and do it????
it's about to thunderstorm here in north atlanta
alright...be back.

It only takes a few seconds. Just disconnect the battery and tap the breaks a few times. connect back and poof should be good. Done it a million times...

stand in a puddle in your bare feet and hold up an umbrella

(kidding) :p

ok, so, the water is really cold...I'm opting out of the puddle thing, especially cuz I don't have an umbrella and I sold my golfclubs.
}:P

Sure!
Just call "Seagirl" the superheroine of art and design, to rescue those from the oppression of bad taste and the torment of fashion and interior design faux pas! ...and to never let a good idea go without recognition and a bad idea go without at least a laugh....(good luck with that)
