Twiggy Sticks Install, tuning and results thread

they go in the end of the main oil line on the cams.... so that oil pressure builds in the cams to lubricate the journals.

oil is pumped into one side of the cams (the gearbox side) and are stopped at the belt side by the plugs - pressure in the main line rises and oil is pushed out of tiny (and i mean TINY) holes on the journals, which lubricate the cams as they rotate...oils is then returned via one of the oil return lines in the head (you can see them when you get your cam cover off).

without the plugs, the cams wouldn't lubricate properly, you'd probably fill the whole cam cover with oil and make a big mess, as well as break things.

Joka has pm'd me regarding the plugs - it would seem that my previous 2 attempts to ship them to him have failed (i have NO IDEA why.... they are just brass plugs ffs!) - and i'm trying to get them for him. I thought they were for his build, which is slowly progressing, but it would seem the urgency is more about the fact that he's sold his cams...

I'll ship any new plugs i get to him directly as originally agreed and he can onforward them to you.

time frame....no idea...still trying to ring the cam guy (who is probably ignoring me given that its christmas eve.)

I didnt sell my cams, I am still using them for my build if i can ever get some caps

I shalll - try again....*sigh*

posted 6 hours ago....

stock cams (us-spec 2L)
intake : 230deg @ 0.003" lift, 8.6487mm lift in total
exhaust : 230deg @ 0.003" lift, 8.1737mm lift in total

stock cams (1.8L)
intake : 225deg @ 0.003" lift, 7.9527mm lift in total
exhaust : 230deg @ 0.003" lift, 8.1737mm lift in total

j-spec intake cam (2L)
241deg @ 0.003" lift, 8.6487mm lift in total

mazdaspeed exhaust cam (2L)
241deg @ 0.003" lift, 8.6487mm lift in total

twiggy cams
intake : 252deg @ 0.003" lift, 8.763mm lift in total
exhaust : 254deg @ 0.003" lift, 9.017mm lift in total

I actually have a complete cam dr cam profile analysis of these :D

Actual measured durations (averaged):
257 @ 0.015 intake
254 @ 0.025 exhaust

max lift
.342/.374

IN/EX (degrees), Cam lift (inches)
228/236 @ 0.040
221/230 @ 0.050

Thank you guys. I have some stock cams from a EX I believe that I'm looking into having reground. I asked about 50% because most companies advertised duration is at 50% lift.

Sweet! Any other feedback? Did the cam doc analysis help?

I just spent as much on a set of solid lifters as I did on the used cylinder head. Turns out it was the old style HLAs (no)\caveat emptor
Cylinder head was decked, seats radiused, 3 angle valve job, ports match, etc. (this process began back in august!)
I went all over creation to find these SOLID LIFTERS!
I could pay $11 each new from MSMS. I got em for $125 with shims off of an '01 Miata head.
Researched aftermarket options to little avail. Crossovers' kit requires the use of their custom supertech springs & ret.
CS sed they use OEM buckets in their 400hp Protege. They also mentioned that the part number for the Miata buckets was superceded by an FS part number replacement (I think, iirc)
Now they can FINALLY complete the setup of the cams in there and check my lash.

Install will run a days labor plus an extra day for installing all my other goodies (cabpatch)

so when will it be done? looking forward to hearing see the beast (91hp??) jk:)

well, as quickly as funds permit
Paying off headwork this week.
Oh, I also picked up a hiboost mani ^o^

No other feedback as of right now, dont want to spread any butt dyno rumors...

Thanks again for sending that to me, it helped end some discussion by folks who are buying integal cams saying the twiggy sticks aren't as beefy as the stage two integrals. (which turns out is partly true and partly false)

ARGH!
I just got word that a strange problem has cropped up with my cam install.
THEY DON'T FIT IN THE HEAD!
Seems there might be a journal STILL not in spec!
DEJA VU all over again. Totally un-******-believeable.

I am requesting measurements before I call up Dema Elgin and find out how mine got:
a) not repaired
or
b) repaired poorly

I am "Murphy's Law" incarnate.

Happened to me as well ... when Dana was putting my head together, he ran into the same problem - they had to be sent out and machined AGAIN. On a side note, I still need a pair of the cam plugs (arrgh - yes you sent Dana a set ... Thank you), any leads on where to get some? I hav'nt contacted Dana yet, but it looks as if they are really needed ...
