Mazda in JD Power

I noticed that JD Power rate Mazda very LOW in term of overall Dependability Ratings, Quality Ratings... etc... Mazda is one of the lowest of all the car manufacturer.

Is Mazda is bad of a brand? or does JD Power have in for Mazda?

Personally I take those ratings with a grain of salt

IMO JD Power USED to be a pretty good guage of quality now they've hoared themselves out with several "products" including ridiculous measures like "The most appealing midsize sedan blah, blah, blah."

I've owned 6 Mazdas and before that owned a Honda and a couple of Toyotas. I personally don't feel there's alot separating Mazda quality from the others.

In my opinion JD Power is nothign more than a marketing tool. And we know how credible marketing can be. :-)
 
My MS3 only has 1300 miles on it so I'll let you know in a few years. ;) Seriously though, I joined this forum several years ago when I bought a Mazda Protege5 new. I owned it for 3 years before I traded it and it's reliability was absoliutely flawless.

Granted the MS3 is a turbo car and I plan on doing some minor mods so the reliability might be tested a bit more than a n/a vehicle with 120hp. That said- there is no way companies like Kia, Suzuki, and Dodge are creating cars with higher quality and/or dependability.
 
JD Powers has their heads so far up Honda/Acura's ass, it isnt even funny. They are located out here in CA in the Valley. Back in 1990 i had to take them a car from Acura ( 1990 Integra ) for review. We had a huge problem with bad water pumps seizing up and ripping the timing belt to shreds.

With that said and done, i was replacing between 12-14 valves out of the 16 and a piston in those cars. JD Powers never even brought up the issue and disregarded the whole thing. They lost their credibility from that moment on with me. My dealership had 42 cars in line for a new upper valve train within 3 months once the problem began. American Honda couldnt even do a R&R because parts were so scare, so if you didnt have knowledge of assembling motors, your customers were screwed for months. I left and went to Ford as a master tech a few months afterwards, so i really dont know how many cars came into our dealership with the WP issue. Problem started occuring in 1988-90 Integras. AH said i was 5 yrs off from making Master Tech, so i moved on.

...just the nature of the beast. There is GOOD marketing of course. Mazda's Zoom-Zoom campaign is a great example of Marketing that showcases the true strength of a product i.e. Mazda cars really contain "Zoom-Zoom". I just have issue with Marketing that blatantly lies about a products trued strength.

Like any institution or discipline there are good examples and bad examples.

JD Power measures one specific category of satisfaction - "initial quality." That is their niche. I am surprised to see Mazda so low in their rankings since the company seems to score well in most other ranking systems. I also haven't had any trouble yet with my Speed3, although that is with a sample size of one.

Not entirely true. They also do dependability studies over a 3 year (I think) period. Mazda also scores very poorly there:

I do think their ratings have become increasingly suspect over the years. Take Honda, for example. You could argue that they are ultimately a company that produces a superior engine, and then throws a car around it. Even their lawnmower engines get the highest marks. Yet they rank average in engine quality. So does Toyota, a company not exactly known for low-quality engines. Volkswagen, a company known for superior interiors, gets a poor rating on interior quality (though they do get high marks for interior design). Subaru, the reliability up-and-comer, gets average marks.

I wouldn't trust any of these ratings.
 
a lot of those rankings are due to the RX-8 sorry to the 8 owners but that car has been a bear to deal with to most avg consumers enthusiasts know what it is and what they are getting themselves into but the avg consumer who wanted a relatively cheap sports car and got something they weren't prepared to deal with with oil eating issues and other wenkal related issues thats one of the major things bringing down those initial quality by brand...


if you look at consumer reports the 3 does very well and comes highly recomended as well as the 6... just an fyi
 
I have mixed feelings about JD Power's ratings. Buick? WTF? I've owned a GM product before. It was a very problematic. Most reliable vehicle thus far for me was a 1987 Isuzu Trooper II (2-door). Absolutely, bullet proof at 200k miles. This was the reason, I sought to once again return to Japanese cars with my Mazda purchase.

But back to the ratings. Having owned a VW, near the bottom the ratings, I would never buy another one again, ever. Terrible reliability. Nice interior, and fun to drive, but an absolute money pit. Same thing with Land Rover. Even worse reliability than a VW. My father owns an LR. I would NEVER buy one. And most recently, I had an '07 Jeep Wrangler. Also near the bottom of the list. That thing was crap. I lemon lawed the damn thing and I got my money back. Need I say more.

So there you have it, Jeep, Land Rover, and VW all near the bottom of the list and I have had horrible experiences with all of them. And I will never buy any of them again. I see Mazda is also near the bottom. I can already say that the materials, buying experience, and car features on my 3 are excellent. So far, so good with mine (knock on wood). I guess only time will tell.

It was the only rating I looked at before I made my decision.

To be entirely honest, I never test-drove the 3 before I bought it. I only sat in the driver's seat of an 06 in Jan, and ordered an 07 in July....completely on a gut instinct. I was not disappointed. (rockon)
