Fatal Wreck
News 14 Carolina's Aaron Mesmer is on the scene with the latest update.

CORNELIUS, N.C. -- Two young brothers died in a wreck Saturday morning in Cornelius.

The National Hot Rod Association web site reports the boys are the sons of driver Doug Herbert.

Jon Herbert, 17, and his 12-year-old brother James were in a 2008 Mazda that collided head-on with a 2004 Hummer H2 just before 10:30 a.m. Saturday at West Catawba Avenue and Jetton Road.

We both talked to him, and I told him My dad doesnt like me riding with you because the way you drive, and hes afraid youre either going to kill someone one day or kill yourself in an accident, and today it happens, said Jon Herberts friend Mike Long. Its just weird how things happen like that sometimes.

According to a Cornelius Police Department press release, "Witnesses reported that the 2008 Mazda was traveling east on Jetton and attempted to pass a third vehicle, also traveling east, in the westbound lane against the flow of traffic."

"According to witnesses, the Mazda lost control and was struck by the Hummer traveling west on Jetton. Both occupants of the Mazda died at the scene."

Two people in the Hummer H2 were taken to the hospital. The driver, an adult male, was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center. The passenger, a juvenile female, was taken by ambulane.

People at the scene say Jon and James were students at Southlake Christian Academy. The NHRA said their father Doug was in Arizona for preseason testing, but is now on his way back to North Carolina.

KIDS.................... sigh =(

If I had a car with this much power at 17, I doubt that I would have survived. This is a tragic loss. So many young people to not live past the life lesson that teaches them about mortality. My heart goes out to their family and friends.

We should all learn something from this. Being careful means that you, those that love you, and the innocents may live another day.

Stay safe out there,
-enganear

I hate to say it, but the kid gets the darwin award... this s*** is NOT TV and it's NOT video games... and worse yet, it's his parent's fault for buying a kid such a fast car... kids are unpredictable and need to stay driving old slow ass cars so that they can learn how to drive a car properly... furthermore, I think it's also their friends fault for not telling this guy's parents about his wreckless driving behavior, or if they did it's truely the parents fault for this s*** happening

this s*** sucks and it pisses me off that parents keep buying their kids nice ******* cars and hurting themselves and people

This is so tragic, my heart goes out to the family. People caught street racing need to get a chance to see what a corpse looks like, that would wake some people up.

I can just imagine the heartache and turmoil that father must be in having lost both his sons. God be with them!

his parents will get no pity from me... in fact, I want to shoot them for being such idiots in spoiling their kid in buying him a nice fast ass car leaving the open potential that it could hurt/kill people

Parents are human and they make mistakes, forgive me if I am addressing a demigod. I am sure you feel pretty awesome for taking such a hard stance on a very tragic loss. Good, bad or indifferent they lost two children, despite buying them an expensive and fast car it is terrible thing that no one should go through.

I certainly hope you never experience such pain, grow up and drop the bad boy persona! Have a heart

read this one and maybe you'll think differently

that kid was allowed to keep driving by their rich ass parents, they kept buying him nice fast cars... who's fault is it?

I can see the mom in my mind saying "why did god take my baby?" god has nothing to do with either of these instances you dumb bitches

these are classic extreme examples of cause and effect... its sad people don't consider the consequences of what their decisions would be... it is the parents job to ensure the safety of their child and clearly both of these parents have failed miserably at this job

I am not debating if it was right or wrong for them to buy him a fast car, sure its probably not the smartest thing to do. In retrospect I am sure he wish he had not gotten him such a fast car, but the loss and pain associated with it must be monumental.

Are the parents at fault? Yes, you bet your ass!

Does it excuse the pain that one feels from losing a loved one? Not at all!

You have a point, but also try to have a heart for someones loss. That is what makes us human.

I have to agree with Edwin on this one. I knew a kid in school who died doing 150 in his dads Porsche. Or one girl who went through 3 brand new Eclipses in one school year (she kept wrecking them, and her dad kept buying new ones.)

I'm glad my parents made my brother and I drive a slow Escort for a couple years first, helped me a lot.

TheMan...Just chill..you are passionate...But its really not needed.
No matter what..that was still someones kid, their son, their life.
Have some sort of respect.
I could see if he was drunk or something..but have a heart.

Hahaha ******* tards.

Ok, maybe the passenger shouldn't be laughed at, but I'm sure he knew the driver would do this kind of s*** by now.

Passing traffic in the oncoming lane? WHAT A ******* MORON.
It's one thing when you're in bumfuck nowhere and can see whats ahead of you for half a mile and there's NOTHING THERE, but what the ****, come on.

Driver's death = cleaning the gene pool, he's too stupid to live for driving like that
passenger's death = cleaning the gene pool, too stupid to live for willingly riding with a driver like that

I feel sorry for the Hummer driver/passenger, that s*** ain't their fault. Lucky they were in a tank.

I'm sorry for their lost but the parents should have known better.

As a 16 year old with a MS3 i resent these comments. I got it as my first car, and i don't believe that me having it is wrong. I am not spoiled, I pay for half of my car monthly. And one more thing, i know haw fast the car is, but there are faster cars out there. I am not putting any car down here, but i know what cars are faster than mine and i will admit this. Some kids in the area near me drive EVO's and STI's, and they don't get killed. Don't be so quick to blame the accident on the car. If the kid was stupid enough to make that move in a Speed3 he would have done the same in a focus, or civic. Once again thought, don't judge all kids by the actions of some stupid ones. Not to put anyone down once again, but MS3 is NOT the fastest car out there. To my parents the car is just enough to get me a speeding ticket and nothing more. I know some here is going say that since I'm 16 and inexperienced I don't know how fast the car is, and that may be but to say "an MS3 is too fast for a teenager" is just stupid. Some people are starting to sound like EVO owners (dunno). So just venting but keep this in mind.

It is too much car for a new driver. It's more than just a vehicle that can get you a speeding ticket. It's faster than probably 90% of the vehicles on the market right now.

Be careful, be safe. Please.

so sad... another cosmic blue down the drain....i pray for the family .

anyways, to me, it's not the car that kill people....regardless of age or gender...you can get into an accident nomatter how safe you drive ...it's just mother nature :)

You are aware of the wildly disproportionate number of accidents that young drivers get in compared to older drivers, aren't you?

This sucks, I feel bad for the people in the Hummer.

The title to this thread suggest the Hummer was at fault, it should read "MS3 slams into Hummer, injures both passengers in the Hummer"

yea... its still someones children, have some respect... street racing is stupid, you might lose control even though you dont want it to... and put others in danger too, im 19 so to someone i might still be considered a kid, and i use to do stupid things to show off... and all those things i did were stupid and idiotic i admit.. and i'll never do any stupid things again cuz a lesson well learned from all these articles etc.
