MS3 CEL when gas tank gets low???

Now, I know about the stupid CEL that you get when the gas cap is not put on properly but that happens within minutes of driving away from the gas station. The last two times I got near empty, I got a CEL that went away a day after I filled it back up. WTF is goin on here?

Get it scanned to find out the code. It will be stored even after the light goes off. Then we can help figure out what it means.

The rejectsd at my dealership say that once the CEL is gone, they can't find anything. Is there some cheap scan tool I can buy to check the codes myself? On top of being useless, my dealership is too damn far and my only option for MS repair.
