Spy photographers for Brenda Priddy & Co. caught this very early development mule for the next-generation Mazda RX-8 testing, and it appears to be wearing a few of the car's new design elements that are obscured by covering. Priddy believes the cosmetic update will be quite extensive, though the basic layout of the car, its 2+2 seating and rear access doors will remain. The front covering is hiding what appears to be the new front end, and doing so very well. The headlights appear to be the same as the current car, though the side markers are also covered up and bulge out, indicating that the new car will likely be wider. Out back, meanwhile, are new taillights, as well. Some diagnostic equipment appears hooked up to one of the tailpipes, which also could indicate a new rotary for the RX-8, most likely the 16X Renesis that first appeared in the Taiki Concept at this year's Tokyo Motor Show. We're just speculating, of course, as the current RX-8 is still scheduled for sales duty up to at least the 2010 model year.

Ehh, still looks too much like the current one. I think mazda needs to go all out on the design if they want to re-vamp it. Not to mention a few drive train things...

Thx, I was too busy earlier to post. Almost every car gets a "refresh" after 4 years. That's part of the life cycle.

Read about the 16X. No turbo in the future, but much more power and especially torque. Although from what I have been reading it's highly unlikely we will see the 16X in the refresh, but rather an all new car not long after.

If it looked like the current one and got a power boost to 280 hp and 200 lb ft. of torque, I'd be happy. But a more extensive redesign wouldn't be bad!

So I can see the grill looks much like the MS6 oval style mesh, headlights slightly different, fender vents updated to a new style.

Left Lane News

Spy photographers have spotted the 2010 Mazda RX-8 while out testing. Set to bow in the first quarter of 2009 as a 2010 model, the next-generation RX-8 should be sporting some significant upgrades. Changes will include new sheet metal and new powertrains — possibly including the 16X Renesis engine seen in the Taiki Concept.

Although details remain scarce on the next RX-8, it should retain its 2+2 seating and rear doors.

A convertible body style is also believed to be in the works for 2011 or 2012.

No problem, i was surprised that this new rx8 doesn't look that much different than the one's out now. Weird rims too...j/k I'm a little intrigued about the convertible as well.

Interesting pics...but it will still take awhile to get any concrete facts about the new RX-8...That said...I'm looking forward to more info on the new 8 and the 16X :D

I wonder what they mean exactly by "new powertrains"...Notice the "s" indicating more than one choice/possibility...Are there other rotary recipes planned besides the 16X? I'm sure some sort of hydrogen or other "eco" rotary will be offered but won't it be a version of the 16X?

Will there be a next gen RENESIS (or is that the 16X)?

Future RX-7 and or small rwd rotary coupe powertrain?

So many questions...So little info...Exciting!

The pics remind me of the first 2008 Mazda6 spy-shots, I don't see major changes but of course this seems to be the 1st phase so still very early to say anything I guess. Now, glad to read that it will keep the overall line, that design should become a classic :D.

mazda, please please please PLEASE drop a ~280-300 hp engine in this thing (and keep the weight down). that would make everyone forget about the Z and the 135.

Concrete info... kinda.

One of our techs got back from school and apparantly someone there spilled the beans on what's under the hood of that mule.

A Supercharged Rotory. Yes. S/C. Along with a better oiling system to help them apex seals last longer, the S/C (he was told) puts out 6psi AT IDLE.

Should debut in the 2009 or 2010 MAZDASPEED RX-8.

I hope he wasn't lyin'.....
