Begi Cool Air Box results.

MS CAI

This isn't the CIA. LOL!

Anyway, the Begi looks like it is missing two critical components:

an air straightener or velocity stack

a smooth bore hose to the turbo.

You have to wonder how much these things matter. They're not getting CELs even with the Xede pushing the envelope a bit on their test car. So, he picked up a good solid 18 hp for about the same price as the Cobb without a box. I call it good.

True.

Of course then Cobb says they beat the MS-CAI by a few ponies....so who knows what is the right answer.

We can all agree this car needs an intake to realize its true potential though.

The Cobb provides both of these, so that is my choice for the moment. It wouldn't be too hard to make a cold air box for this car using fiberglass as a mold though. You just need to make a wood form for the mold core, then 'glass a final shape...then you can make copies out of f-glass or carbon fiber. It would be easy. You could also buy thin sheet aluminum or steel, and bend a good box cover as well.

Just got it LOL.

Thanks

It looks cheap-o in the picture but I will take your word on the quality.

I have recently been trying to discover a way to modify the stock airbox without drilling holes. I have a few ideas like turning the little trumpet-like intake tube upside-down and running some ducting to somewhere in the grille. The underside of the stock box looks like it has some very "primitive" ways to direct the airflow (like pieces of metal/plastic) but I am looking for something else. Im trying not to be too ghetto but we will see what I can come up with.

My GTI had a ram air kit to the stock airbox and it was a great solution for not getting an intake. However, the GTI had a perfect 4" hole with a removable screen to allow the ducting to be placed to an intake funnel.

But back on topic. Can you get the box without the huge sticker? Is the price with or without the cone filter? Maybe I should just build a box around my stock airbox and call it a day. (stoned)

I been running the local dyno for a few years now and see little differnence if any with intakes on turbo cars especially. Now not saying there isnt a big differnence over stock because there is. I mean s*** I gained 10whp just drilling a 4inch hole in my stock box. But come onn 300-500 dollars for some of these intakes is a JOKE! I would put my ebay fugita intake against any intake out there on the dyno, and I feel the 200 I paid for it was to much. Spend your money else where vs. dropping it on all these different intake designs. I woulld be glad to prove my opinion to.
If people wanted to send me a few intakes I would be glad to do an intake comparison on the dyno. I have unlimited access to a dyno beings my friend owns one. If you guys can part with your intake for a week or so and send it to me Id be glad to test it.
Right now I have the following.
stock modded box
spectra custom intake
and fugita, Ill test it sri and cai.
Lets see how far people wanna go to test these badboys out. Ill cover the dyno bill.

Hey where are you? I don't have the MS CAI (which is stock size) anymore but I do have a Cobb SRI and Turbo XS SRI right now. I would like to see what they do but I'm not shipping my stuff all over cuz I need it to drive.

Im in Boise Id. With your intakes and a ms cai i could do a pretty cool shootout. Ive done many many times already on other vehicles. Including quads.

yes, you can get it without the sticker. You could also get it in polished aluminum(I think). You could get any color you wanted, if you wanted something different, that would be fine. They seem like they're willing to do pretty much whatever they have to do to make you happy.
Right now mine doesnt have a sticker on it, I have one to put on, I just need to find the time.

I'm unsure if you can get it without the filter(probably not) but it wouldn't hurt for you to ask them.

Here's the dyno. I know its not the best quality scan, but it's all they have posted now. I would post up the dynograph I kept, but I dont have a scanner right now. I'll try to get it up when I go back home from college this season. Begi should have another copy of the dyno graph--in much better condition somewhere, hopefully they'll post it up.

The car has been running perfectly fine, jujst a lot faster, and I have around 400 miles or so on it so far with the intake.

you may be right, but then again, i'm not sure. It makes plenty of sense, I just don't know how much it would help. Maybe the gains werent worth the extra cost/trouble.

I'm extremely happy with it, the car feels a lot more powerful. I can finally say that I feel first hand why everybody says that it should come with an intake from the factory.

I think he actually meant coming out of the airbox and going to the engine.

I agree, but because the box is solidly mounted to the car frame they needed the flexibility of the factory accordian style hose.

The first time I clean my MS-CAI filter, I am going to have to break out the fiberglass and see what I can come up with in regards to possibly altering the stock box to act as a cold air box with the filter inside it. Won't happen until spring, but I'm going to start planning for it, if for no other reason than to make it easier to pull the filter for cleaning the next time around.
