Unlock trip computer on non GT MS3

1. Ignition is accessory, radio on.
2. Switch off ignition
3. hold AM & CD
4. Turn key to accessory. You should get DIS ON

Thanks for the cool mod. Worked on the first try and it's correct, you don't have to turn the car on. Make sure you hold the CD and AM/FM buttons before you turn the key to AAC.

I'm new to forums and were it not for someone tuning me in to cardomain.com I would have never discovered Mazda24/7. Thanks a lot!

my single cd 08 seemingly can't get to DIS. i bought an 07 single cd on ebay for $75 (don't need or want 6 cd player with mp3s), cosmetic condition was not important, i replaced the front panel (buttons, face plate) with the exisiting 08 (very easy, 4 screws). , looks perfect, now i have DIS, which i like a lot.

Awesome option for us 2008s!!!! Thanks!!

So you replace the radio unit and used existing 08 buttons and face plate?
What was involved in your radio unit replacement?

I am Totally Bummed about all this. I pay all this extra money for something that was there anyway. GDCS! Not y'all, Mazda/Nelson's

hold down DSC button on left console panel while key goes in ignition and start the car. Hold just a second longer after the car starts, and both lights should stay on (the Traction light, and the DSC off light.) You're done! Be careful, all stability intervention systems (ABS, brake force distribution, skid control) are all disabled. Don't wreck.

ABS is not disabled in this mode, and I'm not sure how anyone can confirm that brake force distribution is disabled either. I went into ABS several times at a recent trackday while in this mode.

Don't be. The extra $1500 went towards a lot more than just a trip computer. Assuming you find there to be value in them, things like leather (bolstered) seats, 6 disc bose, auto xenon headlights and wipers and LED tails are all worthwhile to some... and there's certainly no mod to 'unlock' those on a sport model.

... would be pretty weird if there was though.

i know it works on 07's regular 3's but i have been tryin on my 08 and havent had much luck if anyone knows how to do it please let me know!

Hey i've been tryin to do it on my 2008 3 hatch.. but i have a ":00" button to set the clock instead of a "set" like 2007 models do. does anyone know how to do it on the 08's? please let me know thanks!

It's a software hack basically. There is a computer program that runs to control the radio and display. The functionality is in the program, but only enabled on certain models of Mazda3.

Sort of like an old 13" Emerson TV I had, I never realized it had a sleep timer but the remote was lost and I bought a universal remote for it, that remote had a sleep button and it worked!

I tried disconnecting my battery on my 2008 Mazda3 Sport. No happy ending :( I'm really bummed out about this. Does anyone know anyone who works for Mazda?

They disabled the key combination for the 08 model (or changed it to some other funky combo nobody has discovered yet).. why did you disconnect the battery again?

What I was reading in another Mazda3 owners forum is that it still works in the '08 models with a few caveats.

Only works if you have a 6-CD HU (Single doesn't seem to work for some reason).

Procedure still seems the same as before, i.e. after seeing the DIS ON you again turn off the car. However if when you turn the car back on you don't have access to the unlocked computer, at that time you disconnect the battery for about 10 seconds (some people indicate pumping the brake petal during this time for some reason) and then reconnect the battery. The hard reset of power seems to then make the unlocking stick properly.

I did that mostly because I was reading through the forum and someone advocated doing that to help with activating the DIS.

Now I'm all bummed that it won't work on my dinky single CD system... :(

If you really want a trip computer and the built-in one cannot be enabled on your '08, one good option is the scangauge. Check out http://www.scangauge.com for details. It's about $10 cheaper on Amazon rather than ordering direct ($160). It has many, many more features than the built-in one, and it is much more accurate as well, simply because it can be calibrated. It will also let you see dozens of other data feeds from the car's ecu, and it takes 5 minutes to install; just plug it right into the OBDII port that is by your left knee.

2008 MS3 workaround

Please forgive the cross posting of this message. This subject has been mentioned on all 6 of the forums on which I lurk.

I purchased a 2008 MS3 Sport with a single CD player. I was unable to do the 2 button trick to get DIS ON as others have reported. I got on eBay and purchased what was advertised as a '04-'06 single CD Mazda 3 radio from Discount OEM Radios. I knew from the forums that '04-'05 was not going to work. The picture looked like my radio except black faced instead of the metallic color. I risked the purchase because it was only $19.99 plus $16.00 shipping. I received the radio and noted it had a December '05 build date, making it from an '06 model. It was also a 6 CD changer instead of a single CD as advertised and marked on the paperwork. The faceplate was badly scratched as was the display. I removed the damaged faceplate and display, literally a 4 minute job. I removed the original radio from my 2008 MS3 and swapped in the eBay 2006 radio, re-using the 2008 display and faceplate. I powered it up, did the 2 button trick, DIS ON, power down, power up, push :00 (no "SET" button) and now I have a 6 CD changer with the trip computer in my 2008 non-GT MS3 for a $36 investment. This radio seems to have more power than the single CD and the changer works well. So, from this comes another datapoint, the computer that provides the trip computer function resides in the radio and 2006-2008 faceplates and displays are interchangeable. I hope this helps someone else.
